After all the mess that was the Unity fees situation, the troubles continue, with another round of layoffs at the game engine developer.
Multiple reports by now former employees have spread, including a forum post from Behavior Package Tech Lead, Shanee Nishry, that said:
Dear Behavior Community,
Thank you for your love and support for our project. Unfortunately we were told today that our team is included in the latest round of layoffs and we will not be able to support you any longer.
I’ve reached out to leadership to ask if they can open source the project, but there is no guarantee.
I’d like to thank you so much again for your kindness and support and your amazing engagement and feedback. I wish we could take Behavior to the finish line we wanted to get it to.
Farewell
One entire team gone, along with reports across Unity of others being told their time is up. Like André de Miranda Cardoso, Unity Lead Game Designer, who noted on LinkedIn that they've been included in the layoff. Another Florence (Rolland) Rolland-Soulier, who was a Senior Software Enginner, noted they were also let go in a post on LinkedIn mentioning "another wave of mass layoffs hit Unity".
In an article on 80.lv, where they've seen the email that was sent to staff from Matthew Bromberg, Unity President and CEO, which clearly noted how Unity are focusing on adverts a lot with tighter advert tech integrations following the merger with ironSource back in 2022.
I've reached out to Unity for comment.
A good time to remind you of the free, open source and cross-platform Godot Engine that has made huge advancements in the last few years with more game developers picking it up.
Unity are focusing on adverts a lot with tighter advert tech integrations
The same adverts that prohibit your game from being published on World's largest games retailer? :D
*slow clap*
And yes, who needs Unity when there is Godot?
Godot exists and I'm kinda loving it.
See more from me
