The Godot Engine team have announced that Slay the Spire 2 developer Mega Crit have given them quite a nice funding boost.

A quick bit of background: Godot Engine is a cross-platform, free and open source game engine that has seen its popularity increase in the last few years, some of this is partly thanks to all the previous issues with Unity screwing up repeatedly. But not just that, Godot has made some really impressive technical advancements too. Back in late 2023, Mega Crit started supporting Godot Engine directly as a Gold Sponsor after dumping Unity.

Today, April 10th, the Godot team announced on Bluesky that Mega Crit have not only renewed their support, but they've increased the amount they're donating to Godot as they're now at the Corporate Platinum level (which is about €36,000 a year).

It's amazing to see successful developers give back to the open source tooling they use.

That's pretty fantastic! Looking forward to see what they will do with the funds.

Hopefully the Godot-devs (Juan in particular) actually start taking technical-excellence seriously at this point.

It's easy to give money to support the engine. I am however not amazed, this developer has left the GOG version of their first game abandoned with several missing patches (I'm aware 1st game doesn't use Godot).

Hopefully the Road to Vostok dev gets enough funding to do the same at some point. He already made enough to develop the game for years and years. Always nice to see. And it also runs crazy well on Linux. I do have a 9070XT, but it's doing 180-ish FPS 1440p maxed out.

Unfortunately, not just them. I've had other games on GoG abandoned because GoG supposedly makes it painful for devs to update games.
