Steam/Source for Linux
Kame Apr 1, 2012
Normally I take anything michael says and believe the exact opposite, but I shot an email to [email protected]

You may have heard of an article on Phoronix claiming you contacted
them about a Linux developer. Is it true that you contact them?

And does this mean you are considering a linux port of Steam/source?

The response:

Yes, we are talking to Phoronix.

The issue we are dealing with is speeding up the performance running on Linux.

So, the question would be is Gabe trolling or are they working on an as yet unannounced Linux build of steam and/or source.

True, but after like 20 people on the phoronix forums said they got a reply back from gabe I figured "Either michael has a lot of sock puppets or lots of people are getting replies", so I figured "why not" and sent one. I still figure Gabe's doing a massive Linux troll for april fools :(

Is there anything that connects wiki.tf to Valve and/or Steam? Though it obviously looks like a Steam store page, it's not.
Xpander Apr 2, 2012
yeah the url is fake:D...i was too sleepy to notice this at first
Liam Dawe Apr 9, 2012
so whats the latest on this was it all a joke at Phoronix expense again?
Cheeseness Apr 9, 2012
Hard to say. There are a lot of non-Phoronix people claiming to have received confirmation from Valve employees via email, but the authenticity of those claims are as disputable as Michael's. He claims to be going to visit Valve HQ later this month. It's possible he's generating hype (and ad revenue) for that.

On another note, the Steam Hardware & Software Survey has had a bug in the prompting process for some time, which effected the randomness of sampling (apparently only people who had previously been in the survey would receive a prompt). It's my guess that this goes as far back as prior to the Steam system profiler working under Wine. There are a bunch of interesting statistics that have appeared in the March survey results that were not in previous results.

The Steam Hardware & Software survey results can be found here. Of particular interest are a new "unknown" operating system, a new piece of audio hardware with a blank title, a range of new MSAA values (you need to view the Windows only stats to see this), and a few other bits and pieces.

Also, I try to maintain a list of details/info about the survey here.
Liam Dawe Apr 11, 2012
Oh man so much to catch up on....

Interesting to see an Unknown operating system on the list, It must be Linux as they list all Windows and Mac versions...
Cheeseness Apr 11, 2012
I've been pondering the "Unknown" OS for a little while and I'm wondering if it might be Windows 8 or another version of Windows (or MacOS?) that isn't reporting its version details as expected. We know that Wine reports valid, parseable values for whichever Windows version it's set to run as, so if the "Unknown" operating systems are Linux, then they're specifically being caught and labelled as such.
Liam Dawe Apr 11, 2012
Ah see i didn't know that Wine actually reported itself as Windows that's a shame, yeah it's quite likely it's a newer Windows or Mac then.
Cheeseness Apr 11, 2012
The odd MSAA values in the Windows only stats are more likely to indicate Wine users, I think. Interestingly, the value for 3x matches up with the non-64 bit "Unknown" OS, though I suspect that's just coincidence as Wine seems to report these anomalous values the same under 64 bit Wine.

There is also the podcast now here - http://www.sevendaycooldown.com/site/episode001/, people are speculating as to what Gabe meant but he specifically mentions Linux while talking about Valves new dota game.

Complain all you want guys, but for me indies that are native on linux from steam is dreamy.

Who's complaining? o.0
reipas Jul 17, 2012
Well, "be sceptical" maybe is more accurate. complain was too simplistic.

Without any official announcement or confirmation (as the situation was when this thread was started), it's important to be sure that we're not overreacting to information.

That said, Valve launched their Linux development blog today. You can find more current discussion and links on our news post about it :)
