V-Sync not working randomly (Nvidia RTX 4070 - Fedora 40)

Hi all,

I have a strange issue: I have an Nvidia RTX 4070 card, and I am using Fedora 40 currently, and somtetimes vsync does not work in game, I have heavy screen tearing for a few seconds (up to 10-20), and then it gets back to normal. When I started using Fedora a few months back I didn't have this problem. The system is not overheating I checked both the CPU and GPU temps. I also checked via mangohud, and strangely I don't see FPS drop either, it is staying on steady 60 fps, just with the heavy screen tearing. It happened to me with Talos Principle 2, Snowrunner, and rarely with Resident Evil Village. Has this happened to anyone else, where should I start to check, to find the root of the problem (is it the Nvidia (closed) driver, mesa driver, kernel, etc), which log should tell me more? Thanks for the tips in advance.

I've had vsync issues on the KDE desktop and in some games. Basically an almost static tear somewhere on the scream. Not temporary I think, but it's not always in the same place so it may move out of sight. The only relevant thing that could be it is a recent driver update. If I see it again tonight I may downgrade it to test.

It doesn't look like a normal mid frame update either, it's pixelated.

A bit a late reply, but I changed to Pop!_OS not long after I wrote the post, and it works much better. There is no screen tearing, and the performance is a bit better too (at least it was in Talos Principle 2, it was laggy in Fedora, but it was buttery smooth here on pop). It uses an older driver (555.58.02 as of now), which hasn't been updated since my OS install (or I haven't noticed it), so, maybe it is the driver then? If the system updates the driver (or I do it manually) and the problem comes again, then I will write a follow up post. Also I changed my GPU (4070 -> 4070 Super, I sent to RMA the original one, and it got refunded) since then, but fortunately the v-sync issue hasn't happened with this card neither.

You weren't using a Wayland session, were you?
Wayland and NVIDIA are a bad combo. It's the default on Fedora, though.

No, it was X11 I remember (the Steam app itself was buggy under wayland for me, so I switched as soon as I could to X11). I am used to Pop!_OS again, so it's all good now.
