Hello people who remember the Forum exists. I'm opening up the floor today for you to tell me what you want to see on GamingOnLinux.

Things like:

- Is there a website feature that's missing, or that you think would really improve your experience?

- Is there a type of news I'm not covering you want to see?

Let me know, I'm listening.

On the top of my wishlist is an option to toggle the partner links of stores that go through external marketing companies back to direct store links. And if this is tied to a certain support tier, I'd have no problem with it.

That one would be pretty complicated and messy tbh. Some are done via JS, some are directly done by me in the article directly.

That might be true, but as it stands, this is the biggest usability problem that the site has.

Embedded YouTube in the comments and forums? I don't know if that's too much clutter or not though.

I'm very satisfied with the what GamingOnLinux is right now, so I will only make "weak" proposition of things I'd like but are not essential.

  • Related websites, that is something I miss so much from the early web. I think of Le Bottin des Jeux Linux (maybe the english version of the website), maybe some distribution pages and some likely minded news website.

  • How to play on Linux. Maybe some people type "gaming on Linux" because they want to play on Linux and find this website and it do not teach them how to do gaming on Linux. Not sure about if it is useful or not but maybe have on the main page a "getting started with gaming on Linux" or something like that

The Mastadon feed actually provides the first point: in the form of a bluesky starter pack.

What I would like to see is more hardware reviews, or simply "how to" guides. A lot of questions I see here and on Reddit are about getting a particular peripheral to work on a Linux desktop; particularly a newer version of a peripheral that had previously been supported.

I appreciate this wouldn't be cheap to fund, but it could be very useful!

Attaching images to posts (and articles) direcly without needing to link to an external source would be nice.

Tell your favourite hardware vendors to email me ;)

Articles always have internal media, not planned for comments I'm afraid atm but will think on it.

Well, as shocking as it is to me - as I can complain about anything, really - but I have to say I consider myself very satisfied wtih GoL on the whole. I'm always looking forward to my daily Linux gaming news fix.

I guess I can only +1 the previous wish for more hardware reviews, if it could be done. It's a large undertaking though, for sure.

We could always submit articles when we get a new piece of hardware.

Personally, I'd like to see a little bit more news on open source games and open source game development tools. Things about game libraries like pygame or other toolkits. I was surprised GOL didn't cover the Godot controversy, I don't care about the politics or drama or whatever, but Redot actually has some cool ideas and should get at least a little bit of a spotlight. It's another open source Game Engine that seems to have some promise.
I cover as much open source as happens that's somewhat related to gaming. If I miss something, people can email me any time.

As for Redot, I don't wish to get involved or cover it in any way, because it started due to people people fucking morons about LGBT+. I won't get bogged down into it, but clearly the people that started Redot are not people I want to be involved with or cover in any way. I watched the entire thing unfold and continue my support of Godot.
I want to see more game content in the form of reviews and / or game impressions (eg just talk about some game you / other contributor enjoys playing on Linux / is a fan of) and similar stuff.

I already do that where I can, but being a one-person show 99% of the time, reviews take hours and hours and hours to do. If I try to review *a lot* more, I end up seriously behind on everything else sadly. But I will continue to do them where I can where it makes sense. But you might want to look at a certain review tomorrow...

That sounds like something that would be easily done with a user script via Tampermonkey and the likes. Just look for links to the usual stores, run them through a regular expression to strip the tracking query parameter and update the hyperlink.

I'm too busy at the moment, but if Liam doesn't mind, I could make such a script for you in a couple weeks probably.

I don't mind at all, use whatever you need / want folks. I won't bug anyone about blocking / replacing things.

I just want to echo what others have said: I've pretty damn happy with the site! It's in my very small amount of "daily go to's" that I open first thing in the morning.

I love that you have left Twitter and posting more on Bluesky. I think things are going great there. The articles / reviews / hardware etc here I like a lot. Just keep doing what you're doing! I will keep subscribing :)

I do wish the forum could be more active with more of us having a little more of a community, but that's just old man me, I love forums and miss them. Younger generations I'm sure are just on the discord server.

I know and I could figure it out if I took the time to look into it. I put it here to highlight the general issue. By now it's getting pretty simple though, only Steam links work.

What about adding the possibility to sync your pp with gravatar? I don't really know if this should be a default, but perhaps an option would be cool.

My issue there is that it's external media, which for all posts we gate behind people accepting them since it's pulling data from someone else's server. Would look a bit messy really for just saving people less than a minute to pop an avatar up here direct.
