Interstellar Marines Tactical & Future FPS Is Now On Linux

Nope, not only does it not work, but it resets to maximum every time you access the menu! Basically unplayable until that gets fixed. Back to the Witcher 2 for me! Ah well.

Fingers crossed they sort it. It looks absolutely amazing!

Damn, I didn't even see that line about 4.5. Shame it works great for Heavy Bullets and Black Ice in regards to mouse handling.

Yep, unplayable. Ah well. Hopefully fixed soon.

It's not like a mouse-lag, either. It's like the mouse constantly freezes hard. I've tried various settings, but no joy. Unplayable.

I'll try the resolution changes.

It is Unity 4.5, I'm not 100% this bug is fully fixed as I have also seen it in Verdun after they updated to Unity 4.5. But it it seems to go away once you confirm your resolution to 1920x1080 witch did not fix it before.

Dude, you should definitely get a cut from Steam/Developer for putting that link there... there's no way I'd be buying this otherwise. Fantastic news.

I'll take the risk on the choppy mouse issue. Other people have reported issues like that before that haven't affected me. Worth a shot, I reckon!

Icculus Gives Hope On The Goat Simulator Linux Port

QuoteEvery time we mail Ryan Gordon (the guy working on the port), he takes weeks to reply and he never gives us an exact release date, we just get told "it's coming soon".
Wow, that's definitely not what I'd call professional. If I did something like that, I'd probably already lost my job.

well in my defence the developers were supposed to give me plenty of warning on the release, but I sadly got none. I should be able to get an interview though!

I was wondering when you would write an article on this. You're late, it's already been 1h30 since its release :-P

btw, it's cheaper on the humble store right now (at least in euros).

GOG.com Announce Galaxy Their Optional Client, Linux Support To Come
By Shmerl, 6 June 2014 at 5:27 pm UTC

I won't preorder Witcher 3 either, until Linux version will be confirmed. It won't be playable in Wine either way, since it's using DirectX 11 and I doubt eON supports it as well. So no money from me, until a playable version will be made.

Yeah, I think I'll stick with the wine port instead. His DD port doesn't work well for me at all.

This game played very well for me from the start despite being non-native, native should be even better.

Even in this nice case the wine wrappers still have a potential problem. It's an additional (big) layer of complexity that will fail at any moment even when it's been carefully packaged. I like to keep my games to play them again after some years. Wine games are more prone to stop working and they'll be harder to fix.

To those thinking that wrappers are good, I'd suggest developing only for GNU/Linux, then wrap the games for Windows. That way they can have the best of both world in Windows. We don't need so much goodness, just the native.

Quoting: leillo1975I think Icculus should finish a project before starting another. Sanctum 2 have a lot of bugs...

I give him credit for some of his ports. But equally some have been rushed in the past and some are just in a terrible state. I'm sure there are other guys who would happily port games to Linux and it would be healthier for the dev community as a whole to not also pile jobs on him but spread them around.

Quoting: liamdaweIcculus would be paid to port yes, that doesn't mean he is paid to support it with any single bugfix and developers don't want to work for free. We all have bills to pay you know.

It is down to whoever hires Icculus to keep him on, it's not down to him, so you shouldn't blame him for buggy ports.

The problem is that Icculus' name is being associated with these horrible, sub-par experiences. I don't know what the commercials are between him and the companies asking him to port their games. As the customer, I don't actually care - I just want glaring, game-changing bugs to be fixed.

But that's not happening.

The tweet points to good news, but I'd love to know why he's intending on fixing those bugs. It's either because he's being paid to do so (in which case, why has it taken over a year?) or because he's worried about his reputation being associated to buggy games (in which case, how on earth did it get released in the state it was in the first place).

I love his work, as I say. It gives me access to game I couldn't otherwise play. But the polish is non-existent.

Is there any chance of doing a GOL person of the year poll? This guy should be nominated, just from looking at his current projects https://trello.com/b/y0wvS4ec/icculusboard :

Goat Sim
Sanctum 2
Clockwork Empires
Postal
Limbo
Psychonauts
3 unannounced projects

Obviously many more in the past. Its funny, last night there were 4 unannounced projects and one turned out to be Limbo, so who knows what these other 3 are. But yeah, person of the year! His Steam Dev Days talks are cool as well.

Don't forget that Icculus ported some client code for free, when he was paid to do the server ports.
Prey and UT 2004 comes to my mind. So especially when it comes to _nasty_ bugs, I doubt that it is (only) a matter of being paid.

Probably Sabun has a point in assuming that Icculus might be overburdened by the sheer amount of ports.

Enigmatis: The Mists of Ravenwood Adventure Game Released On Steam For Linux
By , 6 June 2014 at 1:28 pm UTC

It's really annoying when I see "adventure game" and get my hopes up.... only to find out it's a hidden object game. To call these games casual would be an understatement, the puzzle elements are barely there and it's mostly just a clickfest.

So Playdead hired Icculus to bring Limbo to Linux natively at some point in 2014 when the game came out for Windows in July of 2010. That, plus the news about Trine, makes CD Projekt RED seem really lazy considering how The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was handled.

Enigmatis: The Mists of Ravenwood Adventure Game Released On Steam For Linux
By , 6 June 2014 at 12:36 pm UTC

It's a hidden object game, not a true adventure game. I've finished three games from Artifex Mundi and after this I'm quite fed up by them, because stories are incredibly schmaltzy. But they have quite good hidden object scenes (especially in Nightmares from the Deep) and nice detailed drawings (but also somehwat kitchy). Logical puzzles are uninspiring. Best HOGs for linux are still games from Total Eclipse (The Clockwork Man: Hidden World).
