News - AMD FSR Redstone arrives December 10 with a teaser
By chickenb00, 19 Nov 2025 at 6:03 pm UTC

I make frequent use of AFMF on Windows to play FF7 Rebirth at 4K 120fps. It looks fantastic and I rarely ever see any ghosting blurs. It simply defaults to on at the driver level, and ar first I was disabling it because who needs it, but if my games are already getting 90fps+ (and they are), then why not take the extra fps offered if I can't even see the potential artifacts introduced by it?
It is a shame my 7900GRE won't benefit from Redstone but I've heard our 7900 line doesn't have the correct cores to process these new features. It's a bit like gtx1080 to rtx2080, the GTX line simply lacks the hardware feature set to support DLSS.
Is AFMF present on the Linux side?
Tangential: I wish Valve would just buy out Lossless Scaling and then bake it into Steam Deck as an easy add-on like they do with FSR1.

I have never and will never use any form of frame generation

I have bad news for you. Every frame is generated, everything you see in games is fake and an approximations of reality (at best). Ad hoc upscaling has existed for a long time, and so has interpolation of low-frequency operations between frames.

The line between FSR and whatever game devs do or did before it existed is very blurry.

News - Unity games are coming to Fortnite as Epic continue attempting to build a metaverse thing
By Purple Library Guy, 19 Nov 2025 at 5:13 pm UTC

It seems like a stupid idea. I won't say it can't work, maybe it can. But what I'm getting is "From the makers of the game store nobody likes, a new game store you can't access at all unless you're already playing another game!"

I guess people who already play Fortnite might use it--for them, it's convenient. And there are quite a few of those people. And, that might keep them in the Fortnite universe for longer. Just that could probably be considered a success at Epic's real core mission of keeping Fortnite going as a huge phenomenon one year at a time. But it doesn't seem to me that likely it would become a success on a broader level than that, or that likely that it will pull more people into Fortnite just to use it as a game store.

Writing down post-installation steps is so relatable but whenever I'm in the heat of the moment during a new install I rarely take the time to read them. emoji

So glad to see the comments from other Fedora KDE gamers. I heard Fedora was a minority in this regard, and the proposed dropping of 32-bit this year did not help, but a leading edge KDE setup was too nice of a deal to pass up, and all my games have been very playable!

This would be a lot cooler if they would support RDNA3. It's annoying that I bought a 7900 XTX and I miss out on features that my card could handle, even when it is still the strongest AMD card on the market.

Agreed.

all hail the fake frames?

Frame generation is OK for slower moving games where input lag isn't critical.

I have never and will never use any form of frame generation or upscaling. If I wanted to play my games on a 480p monitor, I would have bought a 480p monitor and a 3dfx voodoo gfx card from 1998.

Oh man that is tempting, especially since I never bought the expansions and they're bundling them for free to owners of the base game now. I actually reinstalled the original game a couple months ago, but didn't really feel like starting over in an inferior interface (the lack of jumping and dodging compared to modern games is a real hurdle for me, I feel so glued to the ground). I might even get a couple friends to join.

The gameplay in GW1 is entirely different, I'm not even sure I'd call it an MMO to be honest.
It can be, or not be. I played it on dial-up or a similarly slow connection back in the day, so I basically had to play solo: by the time I finished loading a map, any other party members would be far ahead. The henchmen system was a godsend for me and I played most of it solo. It was still fun to chat in the cities, though, exchange advice, find help for the tougher missions.

@FutureSuture you can set GTK Theme to Breeze with an environment variable or in KDE Plasma's settings.
I typed my initial comment despite having done exactly this. Not only do they not look exactly the same but they do not function exactly the same either i.e. I cannot simply throw my cursor in the top-right corner to access the window decorations.

It's also amusing that the project was created in C# and .net -a very much MS tech stack :D

I do love Plasma but I am thinking of switching to Cinnamon the next time the opportunity arises. The reason for this is that while I can live without Qt applications, I cannot live without GTK applications. Lutris, SC Controller, and Firefox just do not adhere to the selected window decorations. They always look off. That bothers me.

News - Unity games are coming to Fortnite as Epic continue attempting to build a metaverse thing
By 1xok, 19 Nov 2025 at 3:13 pm UTC

Calling this "interoperable and fair" feels pretty disingenuous when Epic has leaned so hard on exclusives and the same tactics every wannabe monopolist uses. It might be interesting for Fortnite fans, but who is really going to install Fortnite just to play something like Hollow Knight through it - that's a gimmick, like if Steam had only ever existed inside Team Fortress. What actually matters to players is solid controller support, broad OS support (including Linux), and all the quality-of-life features Steam already provides. A real metaverse would connect existing universes instead of locking them behind Fortnite’s walls; honestly, even Minecraft would be a better fit, and even there it would still just be a gimmick. Sweeney clearly has talent, but his metaverse ambitions seem to reach far beyond what Epic is actually delivering. Cross-play is pretty much the only real technical contribution Epic has made - and even that was ultimately driven by their own self-interest.

The "working" version of the metaverse likely will be UGC, with strong emphasis on mobile, similar to Roblox. Some Steam Machines will be just a grain of sand in the universe in comparison. Maybe not in our perception, but in the market as a whole.
Also, anti-cheat is getting more and more restrictive throughout the industry, and Valve said they are not interested in supporting kernel anti-cheat. Once the Supreme Court has likely rejected Apple's appeal, the only connection between Epic and Valve I can think of would be another lawsuit, this time against Valve's 30% cut.

Just random selection of games into arbitrary categories and pick the winner doesn't really chime with me.
In recent years, I haven't played a single nominated game in all but maybe one category. So voting it's definitely random for me because I'm a sucker and want the badge.

I tried the demo once. Shortly after startup the display went black, the system froze, and the graphics card's fans whined like crazy. Even resetting the system didn't fix it, I had to forcefully power down the computer and boot it up again. That was a first in many many years for that to happen. Haven't dared to touch the game since then.
