News - Team Fortress 2 major update released and source available for modders via the Source SDK

It's funny to see a bug that originates from Quake (later transported to Quake 2) carry on this far long into TF2's lifetime. In Quake, it was often used to your advantage to hide jump sounds since you exited the water shortly after jumping from shallow water.

CS:GO and CS2 community servers were never as big as CS 1.6/CS:S, so if you're looking for custom maps and modes, you'll probably have a better time on those games.
Not to mention old games are easy to run on low-end PCs, even at very high framerates, while CS2 is still challenging to run in many cases (e.g. if you don't have a dedicated GPU).

I thought Counter Strike: Source was dead already. Why are people still playing that when CS2 exists? And why are the servers still up anyway?

I still find CS:Source better on multiple aspects compared to CS:2. I can localize player by ear (it is almost impossible on CS:2 to be accurate for me), the friendly fire can be enabled everywhere (only competitive on CS:2), easy to mod servers, no shitty skin if you don't want to see them.

I guess the short answer: CS:Source is from a more civilized era, when games did not have to eat up 50+ GB storage just to shoot some players on Dust 2.
Seriously, when you're not into all those skin and loot box shenanigans, Counter Strike: Source feels like running Linux after Windows 11.

Really the package manager takes care of that within reason. In the case of SDL I just removed the original SDL packages and any dependencies, and then installed the new packages in their place along with whatever packages I was told were removed. That I was able to install yum thanks to Fedora Legacy helped a lot with this.

They missed a bullet point:
* Same ease of catching a virus as Windows - With binary downloaded off the internet, you can welcome the man in the middle to your machine, just like Windows. You won't miss a thing!
---
Do _not_ blindly follow theses instructions. For one, make sure they provide a hash (like md5) of the binary that you can calculate after download and compare. This makes sure what you downloaded is actually what they provided. Also to reduce further risk (because, do you fully trust this developer?), run from a live boot without your disks mounted.
If it asks for root permissions, beware that it can do _anything_, do _not_ give. Unfortunately, windows devs are used to accessing whatever they want willy nilly, so te devs might have gotten lazy and decided to "just ask to be root".
Ultimately, the best way to avoid the risks of running random binaries off the internet is to not run random binaries off the internet. :(

Easy Installation – Just download, make the file executable, and you're ready to go.

Same here, this seems like a perfect fit for the deck, so I'll wait until they get it ready and then instabuy. I'm almost finished (well kinda finished, waiting on dlc) with Chained Echoes on the Deck, so it'll be a nice change of pace.

If this comes to the Steam Deck - and it's somewhat playable - it's an instant-buy for me... I already have it on my "wish list" for my PlayStation 5, but I'd much rather get it for my Steam Deck / laptop.
It's got loads of eye candy, and they say it's a great game, too.

Thank you for this deep dive into retro Linux tinkering! I’m impressed by how you’ve balanced compatibility challenges and source RPM wizardry to resurrect games like Frozen Bubble and Cube. Leveraging source RPMs to bypass dependency issues is brilliant — it highlights just how much persistence (and creativity) it takes to keep legacy systems alive.

Sticking with XFree86 and the ATI Rage 128 Pro is a nostalgic touch — I’ve heard that card was incredible for its time!

Fun demo although executing the puzzles themselves is not exactly hard to me. So I was trying to go the optimisation route for a challenge, but that's not made easy because there's no way to predict how code changes actually affect the "size" and "speed". For example, I replaced some code with a function to remove duplication and ... the code size actually grew. What? Also for some reason "and" executes slower than "or". The assume the thing is based on weird LUA internals, but that doesn't make particularly nice a game.
