Scirra Construct 2 Announced

Happy lazy sunday everyone, a bit of fun news for everyone today.

A project called Construct (click the name for the link) has recently released a pre-alpha of version 2 of their open source game/application creation system which is no longer dependant on Direct X, they now have a modular export system and they will be starting with HTML5 over anything else (even over windows .exe) to solve the multi platform issue they where having.

Still to be really useful they or someone needs to join them to port the GUI over to Linux but this could spur a lot of really interesting web-based multi platform games, not only that but it would be even more awesome if someone made a Linux OpenGL exporter for it - as that is how they have designed version 2 for someone to actually be able to do that easily!

A multiplatform editor would mean maybe double the workload, and only bring the user coverage up from 90% to 100%. Basically, I can't justify that. Sucks for Mac/Linux users but unfortunately I just have to optimise everything I do for the greatest return.

C2 is still open source, so if it becomes popular, it's perfectly possible a parallel project could start to port the editor.

I thought that would be the case, here's to hoping someone has the time to do it!

So while the main creator won't be porting the GUI it doesn't mean someone who knows UI programming for Linux can't do it.

Ooo, awesome. Unfortunately the current system isn't quite usable under Wine; you cannot edit sprites directly. Maybe there's a way around it but I haven't discovered it

When you create a sprite it should auto-open the sprite editor (in my case it opened paint), what happens when you add in a sprite in Wine?

Scirra announced a few day that they are going to close source the project and go commercial .

That's not exactly right, that was his initial thoughts, he is re-working it at the moment.

What's for sure is that C2 will be closed source, bad times. My dreams of a Linux GUI officially down the drain.

Sorry for jumping into your thread, but i just wanted to throw something in.

With Construct 2, you DONT have to use 'paint' for editing sprites. Windows regards 'paint'
as the default editor, so Construct opens with that first. You have the option to change it!

(The latest version allows you to create touch screen apps, and allows you to include audio)

Check the C2 forums if you want any further info. The program is amazing.
