OpenClonk and Humble Indie Bundle updates.

By -
Hi everyone, I'm Powelly, the new writer that liam and rusty picked up from the great southern land (Australia). I'm conveniently on a completely different timezone from the other writers, so this gives me a slight advantage when I'm not at school, or studying.

To kickstart my writing, heres a little game I stumbled upon (literally) called OpenClonk.
OpenClonk is a very Terraria-like game, where you control an amount of little fellows aptly named clonks. You can jump and climb around a word with underground ore veins, explosives, grappling hooks and sky islands. The game is still in active development, and I found a few bugs in the tutorial rounds I played, but certainly nothing game-breaking.

The game is rather fun, think of it as a cross between worms and Terraria, with many community made mods. The game has a "stable release" and nightlys, I chose the latest stable release, and after installing some confusing dependencies, it chugged along very nicely on my integrated intel chipset (I really need a new laptop). The main aspect of the game was the multiplayer, but I couldn't find any games to join, but the website assures me there were 27 games in the last 24 hours, so thats hopeful.

The tutorial is well written, but initially the controls are confusing, mouse clicks are the "Use" key, and often I'd find myself clicking where I wanted to walk, instead of using the defined WASD keys. Once I got over that initial confusion, the game was quite enjoyable. Your clonks are rather versatile fellows, being able to take a good few explosions to the chest before dying, and even if they do die, they just travel back to their initial spawn area. Teamwork if fairly important, with clonks needing to help each other over obstacles.

All in all, openclonk is an entertaining game that I will certainly be giving more of my time to in the coming weeks, the graphics occasionally look a bit off, but a check of the dev blog tells me that they're in the works. So if you like fast-paced, multiplayer, worms-like games, then you should grab the tarball(or source, if you're feeling adventurous) from http://www.openclonk.org/download/, and give it a try!

In other news, your Humble Indie Bundle now contains Steel Storm, a top down action shooter with "old school spirit". Download it and give it a try, heres a video.

It's worth noting that Clonk came out before Terraria, Minecraft and Cortex command. ;)
I'm not sure if it's the first game with a "dynamically modifiable landscape" (more than just worms-like terrain), but it's quite old.
