Announcing Ensign 1!

By -
QuoteEnsign 1 is a single/multiplayer space combat game featuring dog fights from within the cockpit, as well as first person shooting action after you've docked on large space stations.

Ensign 1 is a new game idea from the people who gave us the awesome 2D/3D game Helena the Third! (go buy that one now, it's good!).

Bits of info have been trickling out on it now so I decided to do a small write up to get it going!

Brandon (onionman) has release a blog post with screenshots on their indiedb page with more info on what that has been going on.

Looks to be a very interesting game full of big space battles where you can conquer big capital ships as well as fight in a first person shooter mode...count me interested! Finally a shooter that's breaking the "hey look at me i'm like every other deathmatch shooter out there..." mold. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

The game does look interesting, but since this is going to be commercial and we already have plenty of single-player non-death-match commercial shooters for Linux, I do not quite understand your aside. This game is a uniqe take on everything though, like Helena was. So it is nice and different.

I wonder how well Helena did for them in the end. Maybe they should try and sneak it into the current bundle... ;)

Yes it is.

I haven't actually seen that many commercial single player shooters for Linux?

Well, of course there are the id games (Quakes, Doom 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein), Prey of course, there was Soldier of Fortune from Loki (still available from Fun4Tux and Amazon.com last time I checked), Shogo and SiN from Hyperion (although Shogo has sadly gone out of stock from TuxGames, and the SiN port sucks by all accounts), Postal2 with the various mods and expansions, plus all of those games with source ports. And that is simply off the top of my head.

I mean in the grand scheme of things it's really not all that many, not many up to date ones anyway. I am looking forward to Ensign though since it should offer quite a lot from the look of it.

Also Enemy Territory - i wish they would release an up to date version now the source is out.

Liams right there are not many Linux fps games that offer a single player campaign and what there is are quite old. So you have either played them before or they are not offering anything new.
I am pleased to be part of the team bringing a Space shooter game that will switch from a pilot at the controls of a spaceship, then being able to leave your seat and walk around your own ship or if you have docked with another vessel leaving your own ship on foot and being able to walk around that vessel also.

This looks cool. It's exactly what I was thinking of doing, except 2D instead of 3D - combining my Rick Rocket space shooter and Dirk Dashing platformer game engines for a new Rick Rocket game, where you can fly around, then land on planets or stations and explore. I'll be following this project with great interest.

Okay, Palpatine :)

This game isn't really for someone who's looking for a shooter, it's for someone who wants to play a space combat game where you can commandeer other ships.

Yeah the FPS aspect was more of a "oh look cool" sort of thing, space battles are awesome though which is what I am mainly looking forward to.

Also multi-player :) Someone mentioned the single-player campaign, but for now we're really focused on making the multiplayer work.
