what happened with supporting indie Linux game developers? What if I want to be free from distributors and distribute games directly only?
motorsep what could you tell us about Steel Storm II. I'm wondering when there will be an Alpha version of it released (I've seen on blog that it is approaching). I've preordered it almost instantly after the announcement, but I didn't get any e-mail back. On your twitter account you mention the possibility of using Unigine for that game, but the major problem is that you can't import content from Blender. Did you ask UNIGINE Corp. about adding this feature.
SS2 alpha will be coming as soon as we add bots (hopefully it won't be an issue) and as soon as I finish another gun and pickups.
Unigine Corp doesn't see it as a priority. They think indies should buy 3DS Max or Maya. I already hired a third-party to develop Blender2Unigine exporter and they got it done. Now I have seamless export from Blender to Unigine.
However, while end-user thinks Unigine is awesome, I can tell ya it's not awesome to develop for. Support is horrible. I personally coded vweap to render and shoot, player to run around and animate in DarkPlaces in a week or two. Considering that I am no coder, this is awesome. I have a coder with 8 years of C++ experience and 2 years of Unigine experience trying to get first-person cam with a gun in Unigine done and he hasn't made that happen yet o_O. Networking is extremely horrible in Unigine. DLC and mission pack support is non-existent. Modding aspects are non-existent. No dedicated servers for the community to run. No way to implement cel shading without Unigine Corp. writing it and supplying it with the engine's SDK. And they told me they won't do it. Basically everything I need for SS2 needs to be coded and either I have to pay for Unigine Corp to code it, or I have to buy full source license (we won binary license, similar to UDK, but less customizable) and code it myself.
So while I have a hope for Unigine, the hope is fading away. So SS2 alpha will be DP powered. If Unigine will not help us with what we need (networking, GLSL shader, modding support, dlc support, dedicated server, etc.) I will be very disappointed and will release SS2 powered by DP.
Well perhaps I wount buy the Game at all then (though I probably would anyway ;) ).
I do want to support Indy Games, but I also want to support a healthy ecosystem around them. I think desura is a great step towards getting that. It invalidates many of the concerns developers have with making games for Linux (discoverability, supporting many distributions, dependencies...).
From what I have read its very easy to put your game (and to update it) on desura. How about a compromise? Why don't you publish on desura as well as independently, but price the game higher on Desura. For me Desura adds value, so I would be willing to pay more to have the game there.
Once ToM will get autopatching, how are you going to justify having games on Desura?
