Valve's Linux Development Blog Goes Live

By -
Hi all

Valve have just launched their Linux blog!

Here are a few tidbits:
QuoteAvoid the rumors and speculations that multiply on the Web.

QuoteSince the Steam client isn’t much without a game, we’re also porting L4D2 to Ubuntu. This tests the game-related features of the Steam client, in addition to L4D2 gameplay on Ubuntu. Over the last few months, excellent progress has been made on several fronts and it now runs natively on Ubuntu 12.04. We’re working hard to improve the performance and have made good progress (more on that in a future post). Our goal is to have L4D2 performing under Linux as well as it performs under Windows.

QuoteAfter successfully porting L4D2 to Ubuntu, interest grew within Valve and, as a result, the team and projects we were working on also grew. Currently, our focus is on the following projects:
 • getting the Steam client onto Linux with full functionality
 • optimizing a version of L4D2 running at a high frame rate with OpenGL
 • porting additional Valve titles

I know we've got a couple of other Steam/Valve Linux threads, but I figured this deserved its own post ;) Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

And that I managed to provide quotes and link to something other than GOL articles? :D

Edit: For clarification, that is a good natured jibe ^_^

Oh god, I hope they don't release TF2, switching to Linux was the only way I stopped playing that game!

I can't see them doing a launch without TF2. I'm pretty sure that was ready for the MacOS launch as well, right?
It pretty much feels like it's their Source showrunner at the moment, as Half-Life has dropped off the radar a bit.

:/

Being more of a single-player person, the one I am most looking forward too is portal 2 (+ portal 1, which I already played after getting it for free during the Mac Steam release. Might buy it this time, even if they release it for free again. :) ).

That and all the half-life episodes I never played.

I'm still slightly worried about DRM issues. I haven't played any AAA title lately, but reading about the direction Blizzard is taking scares me a bit sometimes. I know steam requires online activation, but I will refuse to buy any game requiring me to have an online connection while playing.

Well this put a smile on my face, they must be quite far along now if they are officially announcing it.

Steam thankfully does have an offline mode. You need to buy and activate online but since steam is an online distribution it doesn't bother me, that and I have a good few friends on it is a bonus for me to be online anyway.

It's very hard to say. You know how Valve are with dev timeframes. I'm hoping that the blog will provide us with some interesting insights to keep us going until the client and ports of L4D2, etc. are ready.

Well Valve Timing is an issue but considering they have said that the major features of steam already work it's pretty much polishing on the Steam client they are doing right now, so the end of 2012 seems like quite an achievable goal especially when you look at the people's experience that they have hired recently.

Very very exciting time to be a Linux user right now, giving me the kick I needed to really try to get my optimus nvidia chip to work, thankfully it's getting there thanks to nvidias latest beta driver.

Finally! Left 4 Dead 2 without rebooting to windows

ooh i am proven wrong :) now lets hope that eventhough they develop on ubuntu there will be none .deb releases

I hope that it will be distributed in .tar archive just like Desura. That way I can install it wherever I want and then move into another partition if needed. I don't like games packaged in .deb installing to system directories. Games should be put in their own places.

Hard to know what their plans will be for packaging. Windows and MacOS have a single binary that downloads the rest of Steam and then includes games in its own self-contained location (pretty much how Desura works). That's definitely an option, but who knows how they're planning to handle dependencies. I did shoot them an email suggesting that might be a good topic (amongst others) for a future blog post.
Xpander 18 Jul 2012
i hope no deb, cuz i like to have my stuff installed portable, not in the /usr folders.
if there is deb tho. u can pretty much extract it and probably use with any distro, with some small symlinking probably.
Hamish 18 Jul 2012
They should just handle it like Desura does. Easiest solution.

I left a comment on their blog to point them to my Linux Game Development articles, which talk about how to handle dependencies and packaging, but my comment never showed up. :(

the guys from the Xenonauts kickstarter had a questionnaire about which packaging and such people preferred, pointed them to the same article and told them to contact you. Just curious if they ever did?

Looks like there will be another great game for launch of the Steam on Linux Serious Sam 3: BFE - running on Linux!
Hamish 18 Jul 2012
Not surprised - Croteam did basically say the only reason they did not want to release a Linux version was because of the lack of Steam. Someone should check up on the Red Orchestra guys and see if they were serious about that as well.

Nope.

I'm pretty sure that comments are moderated. I didn't see mine show up until the day after I posted it.

Edit: Looks like it's up there :)

I sort of gather that woth the people they've got onboard that they probably have their heads wrapped around the issues. Wouldn't hurt to send them an email though :)
