The most recent Left 4 Dead 2 update (which includes the community created Cold Stream campaign, plus the original Left 4 Dead 1 campaigns) announcement includes a mention of upcoming Linux support and steers people towards the recently launched Valve Linux blog.
Unfortunately, there's no new information beyond what we've already learned from the Linux blog (aside from mention of a release this year - though with Valve's history for timeliness, I'd take that with a grain of salt), but this is to my knowledge the first time that Valve's plans to launch a Linux title have been presented to their existing customers on other platforms (L4D2 is available for Windows and MacOS PCs, and Xbox consoles).

QuoteLater this year, L4D2 will be available on a brand new platform. It will be one of the first Valve games to be released on Linux. This will allow Linux users to run Steam and play the game directly without having to run additional software. You can follow the development HERE and we will have more information later this year as we get closer to release.

I am assuming it will be like the Mac launch with Valve's full catalogue? Left 4 Dead 2 is just the test case?

Are you certain that the entire Valve catalogue was available at launch? This article by Joystiq suggests that only Portal was (and I know that TF2 didn't go live for MacOS until the second week of June).

I reckon we'll see CS in some form (if CS:GO comes out after the Linux Steam client launch, I imagine there are good chances of it having a native client when it launches).
Valve subsequently ported all of their Source engine titles to MacOS except for HL:S (nothing pre-Source has been made available for MacOS so far as I'm aware.), so I reckon they'll do something similar for the Linux release. I suspect we can at least expect one title from all of their franchises (except Ricochet) to make an appearance eventually.

The thing is for the games already on MAC would that not make them easier to port over to Linux?

Yes and no. It all depends upon the existing Mac (not an abbreviation :D ) implementations, and how mindful of potential issues they were when doing those ports.
The presence of dedicated servers indicates that most of the core gameplay code is ported already, and depending upon whether they want to actively revisit that stuff, I speculate the only significant remaining part would be the renderer.

I suppose I was a bit conservative!
