Linux overtakes Mac on Humble Indie Bundle 6!

By -
So for the 9th time out of 16 total bundles we Linux folk have contributed more money in total than Mac users! This is taking into account the fact that there is 9000+ more buyers on Mac than Linux, this is due to the fact that Linux average purchases are around $3 higher than Mac.

Further giving credit to the fact that yes their is a market for Linux games and yes we will pay good money for them! While this bundle is by no means over it still has 7+ days left, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I hope more gaming companies/groups/whatever use stats like cheese's Humble Visualisations to see just how profitable Linux could be for them rather than dismiss it altogether.

Ps. There is another new Torchlight build out for Linux with more fixes. yippe! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I'm inclined to cut the Humble Bundle folks a bit of slack. I work on cross platform software (and have done for the last 13 years or so) and occasionally you slam into a cascade of problems where fixing the first causes the second, etc. To quote Douglas Adams "I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they go past". I'm more grouchy about Cortex Command than I am about Vessel - the last working Linux build was released over a year ago, and Data Realms recently pushed the actual 1.0 out the door for Windows/Mac.

Indeed, which is why theses issues should have been worked out before the Bundle started. Now, we are getting a native port, and I am grateful that they are taking the time to do it properly. But this was still handled badly by the Bundle organizers IMO.

It does seem that way, though I wonder where the pressure to coincide with Torchlight 2's release came from.

Which may explain why it only got $2 Million - not a figure to be scoffed at but still much lower than the previous big Indie bundle got.

I don't believe that figure will be toppable in a long time. The lineup of the Humble Indie Bundle V stands out against every previous bundle. I'd definitely agree that proximity to that outstanding bundle hurt this one, but all things considered, I'd say this one did pretty darn well (4th highest all up).

Anyway, here are some numbers:

Total Payments: $2,048,565.95
Linux Payments: $319,306.67 (15.59%)
MacOS Payments: $336,910.00 (16.45%)
Windows Payments: $1,392,349.28 (67.97%)

Average Payment: $6.48
Linux Average: $10.48 (+$4.00 over)
MacOS Average: $7.59 (+$1.11 over)
Windows Average: $5.82 (-$0.66 under)

Total Purchases: 316,273
Linux Purchases: 30,468 (9.63%)
MacOS Purchases: 44,389 (14.03%)
Windows Purchases: 239,235 (75.64%)

GOG have an upcoming event where they will announce the support of additional "OSes" (plural). It's unclear whether Linux will be one of those (there's mention of MacOS and "consoles" in the news post about the event), so it wouldn't be a good idea to get your hopes up, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye to.

The numbers are still fluctuating (I'll give a summary in a couple of days when things are settled), but at this point, it looks like MacOS will finish up between $17k and $18k ahead of Linux in this bundle.

Yup, I saw, and I do hope it works out for the better, but GOG voiced their discomfort with supporting Linux several months ago so I too am not keeping my hopes high. I just wonder where all the millions of Linux fans are. Could use them to voice their support. Considering how Mac OS has a significantly higher market share according to many, I find that gap to be rather small, once again speaking for the support of Linux (and not at the detriment of Mac OS either; both should see more support).

Thanks, I've been working hard.. And I do apologize for all of the issues so far on this port. This port has not been very kind to me compared to the rest of the ports I've done, but it will get there in short order. (which Dustforce and Shatter where mine as well). I am still working through remaining bugs, so expect some more updates over the next few weeks.. they probably won't be coming out as often as things have already started ramping up for the next bundle.

This is a quote from the Torchlight porter at http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=33348&start=100

I'll have to agree with those saying they're going too fast. It doesn't make sense that they're already busy with the next bundle when there's still important bugs to fix and even a game still not released at all in the current one.

At last some news. Humble Bundle has hired Edward Rudd full-time, and Ethan Lee will finish the Vessel port eventually. Read it here. There's a link to a post on the Vessel port.

I like to know we're being taken seriously, faith restored. :-)
