So there are things that suggest that the Steam Linux Beta may arrive for Ubuntu (the first supported distro) next month in October. I won't say it will be here but it may very well be, good supporting evidence with recent events.
With recent information we can safely say Portal will be one of the line up titles along with Left 4 Dead 2, along with that Steam's Greenlight added a Linux tag as well.
PC Gamer and a few other sites seem to think it will come next month to aim to arrive before Windows 8 which wouldn't be a bad thing to do.
It will be interesting to see how this will all play out since Mac and Windows are both getting more locked down and Linux being just as customizable as ever the PC space could be very different in a few years from now (I doubt Linux market share will rise for a good 5-10 years personally).
So see you all on Steam soon!

There is nothing to indicate that you won't be able to run the first publicly available version of the Steam client on other distros. In fact, the first Valve blog post highlights that they were only using Ubuntu exclusively during development, implying that at launch there will be other distros supported (even if it were the only officially supported distro, I find it hard to imagine that they'd be able to do anything to actively prevent it being run on others).
The whole "Coming to Ubuntu only!!!" thing is just stuff that's been made up by a bunch of Ubuntu specific news sites ^_^

Actually, it was made up by people who where claiming Steam is a bad thing or non-Ubuntu news sites. OMGUbuntu, Ubuntu Vibes, WebUpd8 all said it will be only available officially on Ubuntu. They never said "Only on Ubuntu!", just "Only supported officially on Ubuntu."

Well either way it is coming, we know that as for other Distros I'm sure everyone will get it to work.

Even this is inaccurate since the blog clearly states that other distros will be officially supported.
