A new Valve Linux blog post titled External Beta News is up, outlining Valve's Linux beta plans for the short term.
A private external beta of 1,000 participants will be conducted sometime in October with details on the sign-up process to be announced in a future post.
It'll be interesting to see how quickly those 1,000 spots get snapped up, and how many of them will be filled by people who might not be the intended audience.
At any rate, not long now!
Edit: It appears the title changed ^_^

QuoteFor existing Linux users, the external private beta is a good release for seeing where we are in running our games on Linux. We will be using a sign up page for the external beta. Information about the sign up will be announced in a future post.
For those new to Linux, we recommend waiting for a subsequent release where more features are implemented along with improvements to the user install experience.
