Steam CDR Recap

By -
With closed the Steam for Linux beta on the cusp of release, now seems like a good time to do a recap of the games that look like they will be making an appearance first.

As I'm sure most of our readers are aware, Marlamin.com maintains a Steam Content Description Record mirror which has a special page that displays items which have Linux included in their "validoslist" value. Currently there are 48 CDRs that meet this criterion, 40 of which are distinct games (there are some betas, DLC items, etc.), and two of which don't have descriptions:

      Amnesia: The Dark Descent
      And Yet It Moves
      Aquaria
      Braid
      Cave Story+
      Cogs
      Crusader Kings II (plus beta)
      Cubemen
      Darwinia
      DEFCON
Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten
      Dungeons of Dredmor
      Dynamite Jack
      Eversion
      Frozen Synapse
      Galcon Fusion
      Harvest: Massive Encounter
Killing Floor (plus Community Weapon Pack and Chickenator Pack DLC)
      Limbo
      Multiwinia
      Osmos
      Penumbra: Black Plague
      Penumbra: Overture
      Penumbra: Requiem
      Psychonauts
      Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45
      Rochard
      Serious Sam 3: BFE
      Solar 2
      Space Pirates and Zombies
      SpaceChem
      Steel Storm
      Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
      Team Fortress 2 (plus beta)
      The Book of Unwritten Tales
      Trine 2
      Uplink
      VVVVVV
      Waveform
      World of Goo (plus demo)

ValveTestApp221020 (belongs to a "SMP Dev comp" CDR subscription)
ValveTestApp223070 (appears to be related to Defender's Quest, but belongs to a CDR subscription titled "Torchlight 2 Editor Retail")

In addition to these, we have the Steam Linux Beta subscription, which (as also confirmed by a post on Croteam's Facebook page) contains the following:

      Team Fortress 2 (plus beta)
      Multiplayer OB Linux Binaries
      Portal
      Steam for Linux
Serious Sam 3: BFE (plus Jewel of the Nile DLC and two additional CDRs that appear to be related)

The official Steam for Linux community hub also now has a "Limited Beta" sub-forum (this has happened within the last 24 hours - previously there was a "beta user test" sub-forum which hung around for a day or two), which only people with beta access can post in. For anybody who would like to try to get beta access, but hasn't completed the Linux survey form provided by Valve, I'd suggest doing that now :)

Edit: Just recently, I spotted a comment from one of Valve's developers talking about the beta participation notification process:
QuoteYou will be getting an email indicating acceptance into the limited beta and instructions on getting started.
We are currently in the process of choosing the participants. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience

      Penumbra: Black Plague
      Penumbra: Overture
      Penumbra: Requiem

Sad that they do not have most of these games on the Linux Desura. Of course they did not give out Desura keys for the HIB release of Amnesia even though that one is available on the service, so in general Frictional does not seem very inclined to Desura unfortunately.

      Psychonauts

I hope they have done some more bug fixing work on this before they declare the port ready for the big time.

It seems that many devs have been shying away from Desura for assorted reasons.

I hope they have done some more bug fixing work on this before they declare the port ready for the big time.

Fingers crossed. Hopefully that's included in icculus' recent tweet about prepping Linux games for Steam keeping him busy.

Sorry to disappoint, but Valve223070 is almost certainly the demo of Defender's Quest - just look at the install script there.

*shrug*
It belongs to a sub that's called "Torchlight 2 Editor Retail", so I imagine there's some mistake there somewhere.
Anon Nov 3, 2012
Hm, I missed that then. But it being part of the sub is a new thing, definitely just had the install script a week ago. Hopefully TL2 is coming to Linux though.
Liam Dawe Nov 3, 2012
There is no Hopefully TF2 is coming to Linux it's all there in the CDR's.

Well, we know for a fact he is prepping Postal 2 for RWS, but he did seem to be implying that he was working on several different titles, so here is hoping. :D

I think there's more than an implication of multiple titles here :D
New games, old games, and tools to support them.

Edit: I managed to subscribe to the beta test sub-forum of the official Steam group before it was made invisible. There have been a couple of threads created (not that I can read them), so it looks like they're either giving things a quick test before throwing out beta access, or people have already started to receive invites.
Anon Nov 4, 2012
What kind of threads? What are their titles?
Anon Nov 4, 2012
Looking at http://marlamin.com/cdr/search.php?s=linux&searchby=all there are a few other things with Linux in them. Any idea what OB could be? Also, Nuclear Dawn?
Liam Dawe Nov 4, 2012
Well it is listed, i have contacted the devs of Nuclear Dawn just to confirm :)
Cheeseness Nov 5, 2012
What kind of threads? What are their titles?

One is titled "hello?", which has three or four comments in it, and one is titled "test", and appears to have one comment in it.

That search includes stuff that doesn't have Linux listed in the "validoslist" property, and seems to include a lot of dedicated servers (rather than clients). OB stands for Orange Box, and in this case refers to the Portal/TF2 era Source engine multiplayer components.

I purposefully combined/truncated multiple CDRs that referred to the same game from the list in the first post, so it might appear to be short if you've seen the full list ^_^

The Nuclear Dawn CDR you see listed on that page is related to the Nuclear Dawn dedicated server. I know that they are looking into Linux support, but I have no idea how far away that is (hopefully Liam will be able to scrounge up some details :D )

Unity of Command just got added.

The list just keeps growing, awesome work
