Steam Closed Beta Now Live!

By -
Thanks to the Steam group chat it has been revealed that Steam will go live today when someone pointed this out, the news comes thanks to Nvidia's news here dated today with the release of an improved graphics driver.
QuoteAvailable for download at www.geforce.com, the new R310 drivers were also thoroughly tested with Steam for Linux, the extension of Valve's phenomenally popular Steam gaming platform that officially opened to gamers starting today.

Linux is also now available as a filter for finding games on the official website: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_4_4__12&term=#os=linux&advanced=0&sort_order=ASC&page=1

Steam also has some planned Downtime today at 11PM GMT (16:00 PDT) so it could well be a late night release for me.

UPDATE: media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb
Update 2: It's officially on - and i didn't get in :( http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882965118606625844/
Update 3: Over 60,000 people wanted in on the beta! http://store.steampowered.com/news/9289/

So people, are you ready? What will be your first purchase on the Steam Linux client?

Ps. Add me to your Steam - "liamdawe" Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I have never been so ready for anything in my life.
Anon Nov 6, 2012
Is it selfish of me to want them to delay the release? I still have to do some things this week!

I am ready! Take me, I am all yours!
But be gentle!

Embrace me into steamy hot hands of yours!

I am more than ready ! My first purchase will be Portal, since I never tried it and I saw nice videocasts of it.
As a side note, Steam for Linux coming this month made me finally decide to get rid of my Microsoft Windows partition. More room for Ubuntu 12.10, for documents and for games !

Is this referring to the live client or the closed public beta? I was under the impression Valve was going to do the beta first. Has that happened already?

Looks like Linux has been added as an OS choice on the steam website for searches!

Closed beta first.

That's not what I would call "going live", but thanks for the news anyway.

The closed beta is going live that's more what i meant since we have been covering that fact for a while. Arguments over the title aside...good find Kame will add it to the post.

Funny, the search is still missing some games, like Killing Floor and Red Orchestra, which are in the CDR.

Either way, they finally got Bit Blot to release Aquaria for Linux (and maybe Mac) there, they never released it anywhere after the bundle. Finally.

Awesome, installs, launches, PULLS UP MY GAME LIST... then tells me to log in with an enrolled account because it's in beta :(

I can't even get it to work, some breakpad error in terminal :(
Anon Nov 6, 2012
Managed to login, bigpicture appears to be there, but it quits instantly saying I'm not in the closed beta...

I WANT IN!

"Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1352224866_client)"

That's all I get, booo!

Annoyed a bit about the controls though, anyone got any idea whether it works the same way on a Mac (the controls on the right even though they should be on the left)?

I thought there'd be nice integration at least. Although there is indicator support.
Kame Nov 6, 2012
Seems you may be able to try and play/download games without being in the beta. Install the Steam client, go to the steam website, go to a Lnux game you own, and hit the play button and tell it to launch! Can't see if it actually downloads the Linux version right now (at work), but it might!

Liam: That sucks :(
Anon Nov 6, 2012
What was that, Liam? I can't hear you over my Steam. :D

All that aside, I won't to play TF2 natively!
Liam Dawe Nov 6, 2012
Damn you all!

Also it's now official: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882965118606625844/

Looks like I'm not in *crying face*
