Akaneiro: Demon Hunters updates

By -
Well it seems American has again taken to the linux_gaming reddit to answer questions about Akaneiro: Demon Hunters so no need to submit them to us! He has clarified why Linux was originally a stretch goal and well...it's fair enough really.
QuoteSeems I'm spending more time on Reddit these days... sigh. I knew this would happen if I ever started.

Anyway, I'm here and available to answer questions, take suggestions regarding the Linux version. For instance, seems there's a bit of confusion as to why we'd "need the money to bring the game to Linux if we're using Unity3D, which supports Linux builds?"

Excellent question (which I appear to be asking myself), and here's the answer:

While we ARE using Unity3D, we started "Akaneiro" back in early 2011, on version 3.something - which does not support Linux client builds. That support wasn't added until very recently with version 4.0 of Unity3D. On top of that, we started building the game with EZ-Gui (for our GUI's obviously), which is no longer supported by the developer in 4.0 so... in order to bring the game to Unity3D 4.0 (and to Linux) we have to rebuild the entire GUI inside a new system. That's a TON of work - and will require a GUI tech guy, artists, network tech guys, producer to manage it all, etc, etc - and is likely to take 2+ months. We had to do with with another of our projects recently, so we know what it takes and how much it ultimately costs.

I wish we had enough resources to just 'do this thing' without turning to Kickstarter or throwing myself on your mercy here at Reddit. As a small developer, decisions like this have to be driven by demand - there are so many other places we could put these resources - if we don't see the external demand, we can't justify the internal resource cost. So... there you have it.

Please let me know what other questions I might answer. And if you're interested in seeing this happen, please help me spread the word. We're at the 1/2 way mark now with 10 days to go. This can happen, it just needs the right exposure. Thanks!

So there you have it right from Americans mouth..err fingers?

So go ahead and support Akaneiro: Demon Hunters and show Linux users are understanding and willing to pay (unlike what some developers think we don't want everything for free!). Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Completely agree.  Lots of developers don't "get" Kickstarter.  They aren't sure if us backers are "pre-order forum denizens" or "mini publishers".  They don't want to "dump boring technical details on us" for some reason... and in reply, a dozen backers will post comments stating that they, too, are programmers, and would like all the low-level details that the developer is willing to provide!

I tossed him a few dollars... I hope he keeps us in the loop, technically.  It looks like it might make it now (they need another $50K in four days, not remotely unheard-of on Kickstarter), and I'd be interested in some updates regarding the pitfalls of porting a complex and stylized GUI from Unity3D v3.5 to v4.0... then I can pass on pointers and tips to other developers interested in porting to Linux! :)
