A Steam based console has been shown off at CES named "Piston", before you get overly excited though just be aware that it hasn't yet been confirmed what Operating System will be on it.
It certainly looks pretty!
This isn't the rumoured Steam Box but rather a Valve sponsered development from Xi3. There has been absolutely no mention of price, features or much of anything about it so far.
What we do know is that it is supposed to be easier to upgrade than a normal PC as that is what they expect you to do. Also it is apparently based on one of their higher model small box PC's that they already do.
Interesting to see, if it does run Linux then it would be rather hidden of course due to the fact that it will all be using Steam's big picture mode.
Apparently this is one of many though as Valve will be chatting to many companies whilst at CES.
Thoughts?

Is there any indication that this might run Linux at all? Somebody was telling me that it had an AMD graphics chipset (I can't check, their site is down), which makes that seem unlikely :/

I've seen reports that it may be AMD based yeah, that would be a massive fail, but their chip-sets are cheaper. Valve or the Hardware guys directly would need to work closely with AMD to get better drivers, the current ones would ruin the experience.

There are some specs listed over at LinuxGameCast, however I haven't check their authenticity. It in the show notes here.
