The Special Edition of Dirk Dashing: Secret Agent! has been released!

I have ported the original game to the new Dirk 2 engine, so it looks, sounds, and plays better than ever! I've also added 8 brand new levels and made hundreds of tweaks to the existing levels.

You can download a free demo of the new version from http://www.dirkdashing.com

There's also a new strategy guide available for the game. This 128-page electronic booklet includes full-color maps for all 38 levels, walkthroughs, conceptual art, and more! You can download a free sample of the guide and purchase it from here: http://www.dirkdashing.com/dirkdashing1guide.htm

This year marks my 10th anniversary of professional game development, so it's fitting that my first Dirk Dashing game has received a major upgrade. This game (and its sequel) really reflect me, as a person - who I am, and what I like - my love of comic books and classic gaming, my sense of humor, my art, my style of story-telling, and more. The Dirk Dashing games are the kinds of games that I've always wanted to make, and I'm grateful that I've had the opportunity. I hope I can continue to make more of them, because I've got so many other stories I want to tell - not just about Dirk Dashing but about Rick Rocket and some other wonderful characters you haven't even met yet.

I hope you enjoy the game. And "thank you" to everyone who has supported me over the years by buying my games and telling your friends about them! I couldn't keep doing this without you!

Sincerely,

Troy Hepfner

Thanks again to everyone who has been purchasing! Yesterday, I broke my all-time record for the most sales in 1 day, and I'm already half-way to that mark today (and it's only 10:30 AM here on the west coast of the USA).

Over 50% of my sales yesterday and today have been for the Linux version. So far, I've only posted the news here on GOL, and updated the game's LGDB listing. So I'm pretty sure my surge in sales has had a lot to do with you folks here. So thank you!

Considering Dirk Dashing 2 is already on the service, do you have any plans to put this new Special Edition of Dirk Dashing on Desura?
MyGameCompany Feb 9, 2013
I plan to submit it some time in the next week or two, but we'll have to see if they accept it. For whatever reason, Dirk Dashing 2 hasn't generated many sales on Desura.
Hamish Feb 9, 2013
I guess it is a question of sales versus maintenance. How much work is it to get the titles on there may I ask?
MyGameCompany Feb 9, 2013
For me, not much work at all. Just a few hours to set up the page, build the MCF files, and upload everything. Not sure how much work is on their side to review/validate everything and plug it into the system.

I'm guessing the major issue on if it's worth it is if you make enough sales to actually get paid or not.
MyGameCompany Feb 9, 2013
That's the issue for me, and why I would submit it - I need to get up to that minimum balance before they'll pay me. The issue for them is, looking at the sales for Dirk 2 and Rick Rocket, whether they decide it's worth THEIR time.

I really thought Dirk 2 would do better on Desura than it has, especially with the game's stealth elements and fairly decent production quality (at least compared to some other popular platformers on there that have dozens of pages of reviews). Most of the few reviews/ratings I've received are fairly positive. I don't know if it's the cartoon-style graphics, or the price, or what that has kept it from being more popular... wish I knew...

Ask people on your website it to submit honest reviews on Desura?

Also Desura doesn't really do any advertising for games where as Steam does with regular sales (all over the front page), featured games sections etc etc.

Desura don't exactly do much for their games.
MyGameCompany Feb 9, 2013
I did when it first got onto Desura, and a few did, but I'll have to make another plea I guess.

I was thinking if I can get Dirk 1 on there, maybe I could run a sale on it and use Dirk 1 to help drive sales of Dirk 2. That's one of the reasons I've spent the past few months upgrading the first game - so I can use it to drive sales of the sequel (not just on Desura but also other channels).

From what I seen with our games sales on Desura, even when we had an article on Rock Paper Shotgun and were getting over 5K of visitors a day, with people genuinely excited about our game. We still never got payed a lot, I remember thinking at the time, how many games are on Desura that don't even reach the minimum sales before they actually get payed must be crazy. They must be making a tidy profit from other peoples games without ever actually paying a lot of the devs. I doubt many people make much money on Desura except Desura itself. If you dont believe me ask Motorsep from Kot in Action I know he said his sales where also very poor on there when I discussed this with him.
