Minecraft the massively popular and still climbing the popularity and sales ladder indie game has a new major release due this month!
So a pretty big update, still missing though is the promised Plugin API which will make installing and using mods easier.
Not mentioned in that changelog is the fact that they are adding in what they call "Minecraft Realms" which basically seems to be their version of online servers (as opposed to joining everyone's self hosted servers). It seems soon-ish you may be able to rent servers directly from Mojang and join big public servers they host.
Also the next update 1.6 has new monsters planned, will be interested to see what they have in store!
The 1.5 update is officially slated for March the 13th.
- Added Redstone Comparator (used in Redstone logic)
- Added Hopper (collects items and moves them to containers)
- Added Dropper (similar to Dispensers, but always drops the item)
- Added Activator Rail (activates TNT Minecarts)
- Added Daylight Sensor
- Added Trapped Chest
- Added Weighed Pressure Plate
- Added Block of Redstone
- Added Nether Brick (item)
- Added Nether Quartz and ore
- Added Block of Quartz, with half blocks and chiseled variants
- New command: /scoreboard
- New command: /effect
- Containers and mobs can have custom names
- Inventory management has been changed, for example you can drag-place items over slots
- Texture packs now have separate images for each block and item, and can have animations
- Nether Quartz Ore now spawns in the Nether
- Smooth lighting now has three settings (none, minimal, maximum)
- More detailed death messages
- Some hostile mobs now are harder in Hard difficulty
- Many, many, bug fixes
- Removed Herobrine

Sadly, I stopped playing right before they hit 1.0 release due to entering University. Would love to game with my friends in this once again. I remember it being one of the first indie games in Ubuntu that I was extremely excited about during it's Alpha stage. Now all my siblings play it too :)
Good times, and really grateful Notch and his team keep on supporting Linux.

I still <3 minecraft, play it way too much. But building something from scratch is just such a rush! I live sketching something and then seeing it become a reality.

For those interested I'm hosting a public snapshot server for a couple of hours to try all the new shiny!
It's over at snapshot.mcservergroup.com
