Start with a single star and spread your empire across the galaxy in a "humble" bid for galactic domination. The experience points earned by playing the game -- win or lose -- will unlock new powerful abilities to take with you that will not only tip the scales, but will also invariably change how you play the game.

Enter Starlink [IndieDB] a new RTS built with Unity for Linux, Mac and Windows! Looks like the game was originally built for Tablets though and adapted for PC:

QuoteStarlink is a Sci-Fi real-time strategy game designed for handheld devices (ideally tablets). Play by yourself against challenging AI, cooperatively with up to 5 of your friends, or even competitively against them -- whether on the same device or on multiple (over WiFi or Internet).

The game:

  • You start each match in a procedurally generated galaxy.
  • You control stars that produce ships.
  • You can direct those ships to other nearby stars in order to capture them.
  • More stars = more ships!
  • Ships can only travel along hyperspace routes, and the number of ships that can leave each star system is limited on a per-second basis (so attacking from multiple directions is useful!)
  • Stars can have anomalies around them that give positive or negative effects.
  • You can choose to bring abilities with you into each match that add greater variety and often change the way you play the game. Teleport? Check. Stealth? Oh yeah. Defense/offense? Of course. There are even abilities that let you reshape the galaxy by adding and removing hyperspace routes.
  • You can play with your friends, and it's completely cross-platform -- so all your PC/Mac/Linux/Android friends will be able to play with you (iOS as well when it gets approved!)

That last one is amazing, cross platform..against Android and iOS, awesome!

Looking at the gameplay it seems similar to the Galcon series of games just with a different style of graphics.

Only has 3 reviews on Desura so far but all of them good (also all favourable reviews on google play for Android), love the look of this one space stuff always appeals to me.

Why does it matter that it's not on Steam? Desura is nice and most games are DRM free.
