Well folks today I break the news to you that Earth 2140 is officially coming to Linux via Runesoft!
The game itself Earth 2140 was originally ported by Runesoft to Mac as stated on their official page on it here. This was back in July of last year!
After contacting them I got this reply:
So there it is folks, next month could see another game hit Linux and my favourite genre too!
Hopefully someone can point us to a better gameplay video than this (sadly Runesoft have no trailer listed for it).
Pretty exciting news considering it's highly rated everywhere I seem to look and I never did get around to playing it myself!
* Real time strategy game involving the high tech warfare of the 22nd century
* More than 120 exciting missions
* Unprecedented artificial intelligence
* More than 100 ground units, flying units and ships
* Strategic order like formations and escorts
* Includes Mission Pack 1 and Mission Pack 2

QuoteHi Liam,
:)
Sorry for the late reply. Yes indeed, E2140 will be making its way to Linux after all. We are currently testing the game and if all goes well....it should be ready for relase on several platforms sometime in may.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
When it was released doesn't mean anything, it's new to us and a highly rated game 4/5 stars on gog with 391 ratings, that's pretty good.
They may not have any contracts for newer titles, also porting a game that is already on Mac would probably be easier to port to Linux than starting on a new port. It's also probably more financially viable to port older titles first to expand their catalogue.

Exactly. Runesoft appears to be seeing Linux as a more valuable market now, so they are putting more of the resources they already have into making their Linux selection better. While it would be nice to see newer games as well, I am just happy that Runesoft is now taking us more seriously, and giving us more of their already established catalogue that they have built up on other platforms.

More pressure for the folks at GOG to add Linux support as they sell all the games in this series! Does this mean that the sequels will be coming to Linux as well?

It's an old game, but I've never played it. I do like the RTS category though and would probably buy this when it's out. Looks like Runesoft does quite a bit of porting to Linux, we should definitely applaud them.

Quoting: liamdaweQuoting: HamishPeople should keep in mind that Runesoft are doing this to port more of their old catalogue to Linux, rather than just grabbing new tittles. Personally, I applaud them for it.Not just that, they update their older titles to fix bugs like their other Linux ports on Desura.
Yeah, like the best parts of GOG/CD Projekt RED's patching/fixing operation for good old games... but for Linux. RuneSoft have been our allies for longer than almost any other developer. We just have to continue showing them that it's financially worth the effort.

Quoting: MaximBI'm not saying that all oldies are bad games, far from it - but why port an ancient title and try to sell it instead of porting newer titles.
They intend to do so, but there are two problems. First, gauging the market, and second, bringing in some income to fund the Linux porting operation with minimal cost. The older games solve both of the problems.
I'm pretty sure that they're aware that older games are less desirable, and likely factor that into their decision-making process. If they can be sure that gamers remember, and are interested in, the older titles, then there is a greater chance that the newer games in the series may also see similar attention. GOG.com has, until very recently, built a successful business entirely around that concept; adding low-priced newer independent titles & Mac games is pretty new.
Lastly, achieving good performance on modern Linux with little work is much easier with old code, so the porting burden is lower.
I'm hoping this strategy pays off! It's definitely a huge risk to bring decades-old titles that people may have forgotten. I suppose they will need to grow a reputation for bringing old games people like, so that their Desura page becomes like a mini-GOG for Linux or something.
How about this... GOG solves their Linux support problem by long-term contracting RuneSoft to do the work and build that strategy for them, as well as assisting them with their growing Mac catalogue. RuneSoft then uses some of that revenue to bring new games, hence raising their profile and improving their list of offerings :)

Afraid no news, our contact who where porting it went silent, the developers on Steam stated they are updating the Linux version and since then....nothing.
