Valves rather popular puzzle game Portal is now officially available on Linux in Beta form, thanks Valve!
Contrary to what Phoronix is telling you (let's not bash him, he simply didn't check anything), it's only Portal not Portal 2 which is available and not a final release, it is in Beta remember folks!
Originally released in 2007 it's great to see it hit Linux that's for sure!

We don't really bash him, Liam; he never checks anything. It's not to say Larabel doesn't get good scoops, because he certainly can do... but his tendency to sensationalize without proper fact-checking certainly bites him in the ass, on occasion. All in good fun, yes?

Lol i have owned portal 1 and 2 since they came out, and i have never actually played any of them. This shall be interesting. IM STILL WAITING FOR LEFT 4 DEAD 2!. I hope this isn't a fill in like TF2 was on the Linux steam release!

You can still run Portal 2 in Wine/PlayOnLinux/Crossover. No speed penalties.

I would be extremely cautious purchasing from Steam. I did after they told me two games were linux compabible (Testament of Sherlock Holmes and Dirt2). Immediately after I paid with PayPal I received a note that these were not compatable with Linux. No ability to download or try what I purchased in any way. I complained to Steam, as I have screenshots showing they said they were Linux compatible. They stated again that they were not compatible, and changed their catalog, but refused to put my money back in PayPal. Essentially, they admitted that their site was incorrect, but have decided to keep my money. They will allow me to purchase another game, but why would I take something I don't want. I paid good money, if it doesn't work at all, I expect my money back.

This game definitely has a Linux port -- I would advise that you check here: http://steamdb.info/linux/ -- before you commit yourself on games that are not Valve titles.
I'm pretty sure if Dirt2 had a Linux port that would be more than no coverage of that.

My comment was directed at future Valve/Steam customers. In my case, they had two of their games that indicated they worked in Linux. I paid for them. They did not work or even load, or download. I complained immediately, but could not get my money back. They did change the web page to indicate that Dirt2 and the Testament of Sherlock Holmes don't work in Linux, but that is after the fact. If they c hanged the web page, it is an indication that they made a mistake. They did make a mistake, the games are not compatible with Linux. But they kept my money. I offered to give them screenshots, but they don't care.

Woot! Portal finally. Thankfully I haven't finished Portal 2 yet, so I can't wait for that to come out. That and CS GO :P For a Beta, Portal works mighty fine on my system. FPS does drop though when I open the portals and look into them.
