Tripwire the developers behind Killing Floor had an email chat with me recently about the possibilities of Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm coming to Linux and why it currently won't. It gives us a small bit of info on Unreal Engine 2+3.
I decided to ask them if their new game Rising Storm will come to Linux and this is what they had to say on it:
I see so you are using an older build for RO2/RS and then Unreal did a whammy in later builds and put in Linux support?
So we may not see Red Orchestra 2 or Rising Storm come to Linux at all after all sadly. Never say never though as the saying goes, we have a lot of games we never thought we would get already!
I actually spoke to Ryan "Icculus" Gordon back in April on this and he had this to say about it:
Just thought I would share what a developer had to say about it, hopefully this will help clear up some reports about Unreal Engine not supporting Linux, it seems Unreal Engine when going from version 2 to 3 decided to drop Linux support and then add it back in.
This is probably why more Unreal Engine 3 titles have/may come to Linux in the future (and Unreal Engine 4 as that supports us too apparently according to the developers behind Heavy Gear Assault).
They like most other developers are being secret about future games coming to Linux.
I decided to ask them if their new game Rising Storm will come to Linux and this is what they had to say on it:
QuoteIt is something we are investigating but have no firm plans to do at this time. Our build of the Unreal Engine does not work on Linux.
The Unreal Engine 2 build we use for Killing Floor has a linux build. The Unreal Engine 3 build we use for RO 2/RS does not. Newer builds of UE 3 have Linux/Mac support however they are greatly different from our build. We are looking into what it would take to bring what we need from the newer builds into our engine without breaking everything. It may turn out to not be worth the cost/effort.
I see so you are using an older build for RO2/RS and then Unreal did a whammy in later builds and put in Linux support?
QuoteCorrect, but in-between there have been many engine changes, so it is not a easy process to just upgrade to a newer build of the engine.

QuoteIt's on everyone's wishlist (including Tripwire's), so we're still figuring out how to make it happen.

I am curious is you bumped your Planetary Annihilation up to Alpha, as it will start in 2 weeks. Of course, probably Alpha will only be multiplayer because I think the AI won't be done to play against the computer until Beta.

Tripwire should collect 30.000$ or more at kickstarter for porting ro2 to linux!

I would be willing to kick in some money for that.

They should start taking some sort of pre-orders for a Linux version, preferably via Kickstarter.

Damn it Icculus! You and your vague promises and your broken port of Killing Floor (on NVIDIA GPUs only). I'm glad I didn't buy RO2 in advance.
Well, that sucks then. I understand the reasoning though, and Tripwire has done much to support Linux - but UE3 was obviously quite prohibitive to the task of porting to Linux for all devs using it.

KF is broken on nvidia gpu's?
i played a lot with friend and i didnt see any issues.
with Default FoV there were some texture issues on some maps (white textures on the ground and stuff like that)
but after increasing FoV to my liking (105) the issues dissapeared

I'll try this when I get home, thank you!

Hey, be careful there. Don't dis a man who has done more for Linux gaming than most other individuals combined. ;)

Yeah, icculus didn't make any promises. Is it really fair to get cranky because he said he'd like to be able to do something?
Back on topic, I had some brief correspondence with Simon yesterday morning about the Linux beta (which isn't up yet), asking whether they were planning to do 32 bit builds in addition to 64 bit (the earlier engine tests were 64 bit only). Sounds like that's not likely to happen, but we'll see how it goes.
I have no idea how many 32 bit users there are amongst GOL readership, but with Steam supporting 32 bit, I imagine there are still plenty around the broader Linux gaming community.
I backed at an alpha tier. I can probably write some words about it when it's up and about ^_^I am curious is you bumped your Planetary Annihilation up to Alpha, as it will start in 2 weeks. Well this was kind of a kick in the teeth...
On the bright side, at least now I have a RO2 code to trade. :P

Wow, this bit could potentially be huge: "Newer builds of UE 3 have Linux/Mac support however they are greatly different from our build."
Linux officialy supported by Epic (again)? How come we haven't heard about this until now? Can anyone get any other dev team to verify this?
Edit:
What I mean is couldn't they just be talking about the OpenGL support that comes with the official Mac OSX version? That is not quite Linux support.

I'm trying to touch base with a couple of devs that I know who use it. If I had time, I'd probably contact Epic for comment as well.
