That's right yet another title is now official stable enough not be in Beta, that's Portal for Linux!

So then Valve have released a few awesome titles onto Linux and I am sure many will be forever grateful for their Linux push, they still have a few titles still to come and I am wandering, when they will come to Linux?

Portal 2
So we have Portal now, one of Valve's most interesting titles that's for sure but can anyone guess when we will see Portal 2? Portal 2 expands a lot on the first one and includes a co-op mode to play with friends so, it's sure to be another hit! When will it hit though? That's the real question.

DOTA 2
The one I am probably most looking forward to is DOTA 2, it's a very competitive game and the types of players you can regularly find can be quite err..horrible? Still if you find good people to play with this is a game like TF2 that can be played for endless hours of fun.

Counter Strike: GO
The latest version of Valve's popular Counter Strike series has yet to hit Linux, with it's graphical updates, new maps and game types this is sure to be a hit with FPS on Linux.

Left 4 Dead
So we have Left 4 Dead 2 in Beta forum but, will we get the original game? That remains to be seen but a few people do seem to prefer the balance in the original over the current version. I'm unsure on this one, since L4D2 includes the original campaign but of course it plays differently, this is why I think they won't port the original as the newer version has that.

We also have a good list of Valve titles that are still in beta including Left 4 Dead 2, Half-Life 2 and it's episodes, so they still need a bit of further polishing.

The question is folks, can you guess when they will be released? This is just for a bit of fun, if you have played the titles before in say Wine or Windows (I know some of you dual boot, I am still 'guilty' of having Windows on a very small partition!)  let us know how you found them and are they worth it for prospective Linux only purchasers?

Personally the way I think it will go down for future Valve titles on Linux will be (in order appearance on Linux);
  • Portal 2
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • DOTA2, I don't think we will see DOTA2 until next year either so prepare for a long wait!

One of the main reasons I think it will be a little slow is taking into account the amount of games still in Beta, if you look at their Github's they have a fair few bug reports open so I think the Valve Linux guys may have a lot of work ahead of them before they do yet another port! What about Alien Swarm, Half-Life Source and Half-Life Deathmatch Source?

I tend to forget about them really, mainly as no one else seems to really talk about them!

There is this post on the steam forum to ask for a Linux version of Alien Swarm, you should all add your wishes there too.

None of them are even out for Mac, but neither were the Goldsrc titles when Valve started their Linux porting adventure. Porting those three titles to Linux would be a great gesture showing how commited they are, just like with the Goldsrc titles. Another way of showing that would be to port the Source SDK and modding tools.  If they port the titles you mentioned and I mentioned + the SDK and modding tools they would basically have nothing left they even could port at all. Besides Half-Life Decay but that didn't even get a Windows release as it was console exclusive(PS2).

I think Portal 2 is most likely the next goal -- though I kind of wish they would go for CS:GO, just as it's a newer iteration of the engine.

I have to say, I don't agree about your L4D comment. It would be silly for them not to port it considering the amount of people that still play it; not to mention it would end up being the only title they actively chose against porting it. I do, however, think it will be on the back burner -- much like I imagine HL:S and HLDM:S are.

Either way I didn't think in a million years I would be downloading games to play in Linux on Steam. I'm downloading Portal now. I bought Half Life 2 last month and love it.

I sincerely hope that Left 4 Dead does get ported. It just wouldn't make sense to me for it not to get ported considering Valve's previous efforts. In addition, I think it would make most sense for Valve to release games in terms of their requirements i.e. games with higher requirements should be released later to benefit from newer graphics drivers.

I swear I read that the Valve team had confirmed (once, somewhere) that DOTA 2 was coming eventually.  Perhaps I'm conflating that with something else, but I'll go try to dig that info up.

Half-Life 2 is not marked beta in my account since today! True story.

Why does it not show the tux icon yet in the steam store page?
