DOTA2 has finally gotten it's official release now and the developers have officially stated the Linux (and Mac) version is to hit soon!
Speaking on their official release post they state this very clearly:
Awesome news, I honestly didn't think it would be the next Valve game we get, I love being wrong. Personally it is one of my favourites and a game I have spent many hours on under Wine.
Considering it's the most popular game on Steam and has been for some time, this is going to be huge for Linux to have such an active game, considering it's free as well is just an added bonus.
They already have their issue tracker up ready for bug reports.
Update: It seems it may even drop rather soon when you look at a Valve developers comments;
So who wants to place bets? Next week anyone?
Update 2: We now officially have the Test client which should show up in your Linux Steam clients, the main client shouldn't be too far behind, a month or two hopefully!
About DOTA2:
Dota began as a user-made modification for Warcraft 3 and has grown into one of the most played online games in the world. Following in the tradition of Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Portal, and Alien Swarm, Dota 2 is the result of Valve hiring the community developers who built the mod and giving them the chance to finally build a full product out of their idea with the help of a professional team of developers and artists at Valve.
As for the gameplay, it’s a little hard to describe. The camera is set in the traditional RTS perspective, but it wouldn’t be fair to call Dota an RTS. And while each hero starts at level 1, and many times hits the level cap of 25, it wouldn’t be fair to call it an RPG.
Lots of people have tried to assign various genre names to Dota, but we think Action RTS is probably the most descriptive. And while we don’t spend a lot of time trying to figure out what genre the game is inventing, we can’t stop playing it internally!

QuoteWill Dota 2 be available for Mac or Linux?
The Mac and Linux builds are currently in testing and will be available soon.

QuoteThe beta is going out very soon; the reason we're filling the bug tracker with known issues in advance is to avoid a flurry of duplicate reports when it does.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
I was running Dota 2 earlier. It seemed to crash alot..but that was expected. So far i could just watch matches. I tried to find a game...it never found one. I couldn't do bot matches...it would get to the loading screen and then crash to desktop, and i couldn't do the practice mode....crash to desktop. I could just watch people play. It was pretty cool though. Something nice and new to look at. I cant wait to get a chance to play.
