Deep SIlver's AAA games could come to linux

By -
Some of you may have been disappointed by the latest Humble Bundle being Windows only, well the good news is the developers are looking at Linux right now.

It is quite likely (pure speculation) that this is due to Linux statistics from bundle.

I am talking about this post on their reddit AMA:

Can we count on native Linux versions for your current/next games? It would be super awesome. :)

[–]deepsilver_guido Deep Silver[S]
i would say there is a good chance ;)

So in future we could see titles like Saints Row and Dead Island come to Linux, that would be a huge boon for us as they are major titles!

So thanks to them being in a Humble Bundle we could see future titles actually come to Linux, it probably helps that the second highest payment was from a @LinuxGamers twitter account, good work!

Remember though folks, don't go buying the games yet if you don't want to be disappointed in-case it turns out to be another Unreal Tournament 3 eh ;) Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

If they gave us something a little more concrete, then I would be willing to take the risk. Even if they only committed to 100% to one game in the bundle.

I'd like to say, that Deep Silver would then become my favorite VG company/publisher/whatever, but it already is :D

I still wonder ... usually, our (German) companies are ... well ... slow considering new developments. Although it's just a very small hint, I'm really surprised - far more than I expected.

I have decided to not ignore partially or wholly Windows or Steam bundles any more but I never give a Humble tip and in this case since it was the worse kind 100% Steam only AND 100% Windows only at the same time I didn't give Deep Silver a cent. So 100% of my $26 contribution went to charity.

I have a friend with a Windows box that I can game on sometimes so I bought the bundle. I'd play a lot more at home if the games came to Linux.

"which is of course thanks to being in the bundle"

That's not obvious at all. How did you come to that conclusion? Source?

Didn't we hear something similar many times?
IIRC, the CEO of THQ (I know it's defunct by now) twittered something
like "Oh, you want Linux support? Then we'll have a look." after many
Linux users were upset about the Win-only THQ HumbleBundle.

I'll take it with tweakedenigma: I won't get my hopes high
until they release the first AAA native Linux binary.

According to cheese who spoke to Jeff (Humble's owner) they are impressed with our numbers from the bundle.

Thinking about native Metro games... It would be so good.

Ok, then you should say that in the post, and put a link. It looks like you're just making it up otherwise.

It was from IRC.

Also why else would they be looking at it since they have no Linux stats other than from this bundle? There AMA is also because of the bundle, it's not hard putting them together to the conclusion of....it's because of the bundle.

Not giving Deep Silver any money is a GREAT way to show Linux support. Not.

Think about it this way, if all humble bundles were DRM free and cross platform: A) There wouldn't be as many ( I.E less frequently) B) Fewer companies would agree to have their game in the bundle out of piracy concerns etc. I honestly don't think "windows only" bundles are THAT bad, especially if the games might come to Linux down the road.

I payed the $25 because I game on Windows as well and I SUPPORT all developers.

For one, we know THQ was considering ports shortly before they went bankrupt and their games auctioned to Deep Silver. http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/thq-looking-at-possible-linux-ports.1536

Anything without source is speculation, even if it looks obvious to you. We don't know what's going on behind Deep Silver's closed doors. If you want to be a credible news site and not a tabloid, you should consider this. I don't have anything against you, but I want good Linux news sites and not more Phoronix.
Liam Dawe Aug 8, 2013
We will never be anything like Phoronix, I just tend to have a poor choice of wording over making shit up...

I have edited it to make it clearer. I hope that is sufficient.

I do tend to forget people have different thought patterns to me, Cheese is usually the first to slap me for that in IRC.

Yes, that is good :)
Thank you.

Haha, you have a great community around you here, Liam!  Cheese has a good sense for tactful wording, I completely agree.  We'll keep you in check!
Just keep running the site, bringing in the content, and staying honest & humble.   The difference between GOL and "other sites" is precisely what you've done again and again;  listening to your friends and being flexible.  I'm doubtful that we'll see those characteristics from "other sites" any time soon ;)
berarma Aug 8, 2013
For me there's a big difference in saying "I would say there's a good chance" and "we're fully commited to do it and working on it". I already knew it could happen, same as "it could rain", I'd like to know that you're working on making it happen.

THQ planning to do ports when it's clear they're getting ready to file bankruptcy? Clearly no. For Deep Silver I guess it's the same, they just want to get the maximum income from the usual HB customers.

What in the world...am I the only Linux users in the world that uses Linux as my only OS?. :(

Some people have to use windows for work, word, etc. Also, Linux doesn't support all the games I want to play. So windows is a must.

I used Windows for 15 years. It's understandable for Work, but I don't feel a Game is worth losing my rights and privacy over. Call me crazy, I just don't think I could knowing use an OS with a backdoor built-in for the NSA or see myself giving money to a company who seeks to destroy Linux by funnelling money to people like SCO and forcing OEMs to place features in Hardware like 'Secure Boot' with sole intentions of impeding installations of alternative software.

Some people I know dual boot, yet spend 90% of their time in Windows. I think people like that should probably just use Windows since it's obvious they have no interest in Linux. I wonder what all those people will do when Microsoft goes belly-up and they lose their crutch, no company lasts forever. I have Games I want to play too, but I value the lives of the men and women who died for the rights that would be stripped from me if I used Windows for a Video Game.

It's not really my opinion, but as individuals we all have different views of the facts. Sometimes it leads us down the wrong path and one day we wake up with less freedoms because of our choices. Like I've always said though, I'll never understand people that use Windows. ^_^

Incidentally, we've heard this same rhetoric from THQ and Blizzard also and nothing has come from it. "I'll believe it when I see it" is a phrase that come to mind, otherwise I ignore them and their Games.

Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors to the Linux kernel. The NSA argument is invalid because no matter what you do, you're still at some risk. I love Linux don't get me wrong, but until I can play every PC game I want to on Linux, I will be using windows.

Side note: secure boot was more for blocking malware from installing its own boot loader etc.
