You awake from the cold chill of your cryo-tube to discover cybernetic implants grafted to your flesh and the crew of the starship Von Braun slaughtered. The infected roam the halls, their screams and moans beckoning you to join them as the rogue artificial intelligence known as SHODAN taunts and ridicules your feeble attempt to unravel the horrifying mystery of the derelict starship Von Braun.

UPDATE: The developers got back to me about my questions! Here is the conversation;
LiamHello my name is Liam from GamingOnLinux.com I am enquiring about a recent entry in the Steam Database for System Shock 2. I am here to check to see if this is correct in that the game is coming to Linux? You are listed as the publisher so I am hoping you know.
PublisherHello Liam,
That is correct, we are publishing SS2 to Linux in the very near future.
Is there anything else we can do for you?
LiamThank you.
Is there a reason you are using wine as opposed to porting natively?
PublisherYes, unfortunately we do not have access to the source code.
LiamThanks for replying again.
Is it a case of not having the rights to the source code or does the code itself no longer exist?
PublisherThe code has been lost.

Hmm bit weird cos the steamDB says the game developer is Irrational Games. However they are porting bioshock infinite to Mac and they said they will not port Bioshock infinite to Linux but they are porting this? hmm they might change their mind anyway

Probably a lot easier to port an older title that already has a mac version.

Good news. I did buy this game from steam sale in small hope that there was linux port someday.

It seems Night Dive Studios (the guys who handle the digital distribution of SS2) don't have access to the game's source code, they got it working on modern versions of Windows with the help of various community made patches. Their Mac OSX version is using a Wine wrapper, so chances are they'll release the Linux version the same way...

That is unfortunate. In that case it is better to get the Windows version and run it in a normal Wine. At least then you are not stuck with whatever version of Wine they packaged it with, and all the hacks they made. At least that is my sour experience.

Going by a reddit discussion the source code was leaked from someone buying a second hand PC so who knows maybe they are using that code, only time will tell.

I'll wait till they release a port. Might as well have the wine experience in the meantime. The game is old I don't think you'll lose a lot of fps running it in wine ;)Indeed that wasn't a smart move.just got mine via gog.com's summer sale and YEP, there's absolutely NO SIGN of linux support thereWhy buy Windows games and then be disappointed that there's no Linux version?

Personally I don't consider this a problem, as long as Wine is bundled and Linux is is a supported OS. More than a few games have been brought to OSX using this method and anything that brings us more games is Good in my view.

As long as the WINE bottle is properly maintained and optimized, it's better than nothing. And judging by the age of this game WINE should handle it very well.

I have refurbished some of the System Shock 2 code that was leaked, still figuring out a few missing or broken headers and alternatives to the Windows CE libraries but I think it's about time to get in touch with the publisher. :)

I am sure I remember Steam saying that all Linux games had to be native. No wine wrappers allowed. That is why Braid isn't on Steam for Linux.
