That's my point.

As someone who has never played the X series before, which would be the best to start with?

imho: either Terran Conflict or Albion Prelude. The later is even more geared towards beginners (thus at times a bit easy and speed up in terms of progression) but TR is overall better (in terms of story, content, etc) and also one of the easier ones to start with.

In the end you have to make a decision if you want your first experience it to be easier (AP) or more immersive (TC) ;)

PS: I would not recommend the older ones to start with unless you are an absolute sucker for the story. The later games (X3 series) are great improvements and with the older ones especially the UI can be a a pain to use.
If you want to play them in a row I would still recommend to get started with AP or TC and then go back to part one as those will give you a way better introduction to and understanding of the underlying systems.

These games can be rather difficult for people new to the series. I only played Terran, it has a very limited tutorial at the beginning that really explains nothing. My brother played for a few weeks but quit because he said making money was too difficult. At the time he quit he a large Space Station built and some pilots.

I actually bought Freespace 2 from Desura a few days ago, VERY nice Space game there for $5. And they include the Open Source version with it. The X games here are for people with lots of time and patience, and even if you're not going to play them, this is a good deal that I wouldn't pass up.

I wish I had the time to play them. It is a bit like Eve Online, they are game of such a scale and scope that you really need a lot of time to play them properly. Even my gf complains when I check my village at Animal Crossing!!!
