Something odd has happened to Steam for Linux and you might face some difficulties starting/restarting it at the moment. We don't know what causes this, but luckily we have a quick temporary fix for you!
If your Steam seems to hang during starting up with terminal output similar to this then you have to run a quick command to fix it until you start it up next time. This is the command (source: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/864978835653093697/):
Removing the appcache doesn't seem to affect Steam in any way and hopefully the permanent patch for this annoying bug will be released soon.
Edit by liamdawe: You will also need to kill any Steam processes running.
Edit: Removing the appcache actually might affect installing games on Steam, but we have mixed results about that.

Quoting: FutureSutureOur friend GTux installed a bunch of games on Steam without a hitch, but it seems few games are uninstallable and I heard some people had problems installing their games, so I threw that warning there (don't want to get flamed and blamed). The games that are already installed remain unaffected. But playing it safe until a proper fix might still be a good idea.Quoting: Quote from SamsaiEdit: Removing the appcache actually might affect installing games on Steam, but we have mixed results about that. After reading that, I decided not to apply this fix just yet. Interesting, when I first started Steam today, everything was just fine, then, a few minutes ago, when I restarted the system the problem appeared but the aforementioned code did the job and everything is working with no problems apparently.

I was like "This isn't happening to me..."; but when I attempted to launch steam the second time I got the same terminal messages, I do not even use beta. I can confirm this and which the workaround worked too

I am using the Beta too and one thing worth noting is you must do this procedure everytime you launch Steam.

Oh that's interesting, just tried again to open it and this time it won't open at all. Even that command doesn't seem to help, very odd.
Edit: Very strange, started working again....
