The Cheapskate's Corner 19 (Sep 27th - Oct 3rd)

By -
Hello everyone, welcome back to The Cheapskate's Corner! Even though this time we haven't skipped a week, we nonetheless have many interesting ongoing and new sales and bundles to keep you entertained until the next issue of this column. But before let's torture ourselves by remembering those already finished deals that we no longer can buy:

image

· Humble Indie Bundle 9 came and went, and it left us some excellent Linux debuts. Just to make you jealous in case you missed it, we're going to list its contents: Trine 2: Complete Story, Mark of the Ninja, Eets Munchies Beta, Brütal Legend, FTL: Faster Than Light, FEZ, Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, A Virus Named TOM, Bastion, and Limbo. This bundle has been replaced by a new Android-only Humble Mobile Bundle... Are the good old crossplatform Humble Bundle with Android bundles gone for good? :(

· Last week's Humble Weekly Sale offered us up to 3 Steam-only Linux games: X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict, and X3: Albion Prelude. The new weekly deal also has some Linux content, so keep reading to know what is it.

· Indiebundle.org's SciFi Bundle has been retired to make room for new deals. By acquiring this particular bundle you could get the soon-to-come-to-Linux Constant C and the Exodus Wars: Fractured Empire alpha. Additionally, Beyond Beyaan was also included and it was recently confirmed to be heading to Linux.

· The Indie Gala Flashpoint ended after being prolonged for two more days. Between the bonus games for this deal there were Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 and a complete Killing Floor bundle with 13 DLCs. Moreover, some of the other games may end up being available for Linux in the future: Knytt Underground, Musaic Box, and
Ignite.

· FireFlower Games' Puzzle Sale finished at the beginning of this week and so you needed to be quick to catch Gravi, Inverto, Kairo, or Non Flying Soldiers at a discount. As we told you, their newsletter announced another sale for this week but we certainly didn't see one, unless of course they were referring to this. Anyway, you could try it in case there's a particular game that's piquing your curiosity and you're willing to get it at 20% off.

· IndieGameStand is back in Good Guy mode as its current deal is a Linux-compatible one (see below for more info on it) just like the previous one: the PixelJam Trilogy/Octology Deal, including Potatoman Seeks the Troof, beta access to Bitku, Planeteri, Dino Run SE, Dino Run: Marathon of Doom, Snowball, the PixelJams Vol. 1 music compilation, the Potatoman OST, and access to the PixelJam Treat List.

No new activity at IndieBundle.org: after last week's retirements and new additions, the roster of ongoing bundles has stabilized at three. All of them have some Linux content and we're going to detail it for you:

· The Phoenix Horror Bundle offers you The Cat Lady for $5; remember that this game can be played natively on Linux using the AGS Linux port. Additionally, the bundle also includes the first 2 episodes of Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, the first one in the $5 tier and the second one in the $7 Bundle+ level. Both games are allegedly coming to Linux whenever the developers finish the 4 games for this series and upgrade their Unity license to v4.

· The Anime Bundle  contains Planet Stronghold at the $5 level, and QuestRun at the $7 Bundle+. Besides, Fatal Theory is going to be ported to Linux, so here's another reason to go for the bull bundle.

· Finally, the SciFi 2 Bundle is only offering one Linux game right now: Snorms. However, 3 out of the other 4 games in the bundle could be available for Linux someday: Exoplanet: First Contact could be ported to Linux if there's enough demand, BrokenEarth was allegedly coming soon, and the developers of Compromised are currently switching to use MonoGame and will eventually release the game for Linux.

Bundle Stars' Atomic Indie Bundle has yet again been prolonged for an entire additional month, so you still have plenty of time to get SpaceChem for $5 or your local equivalent. However, as we always say, we like to reward those developers that chare about Linux and getting it here won't result in much of your money going to Zachtronics Industries. So we'd like to encourage you to get this game by other means: there are at least 3 of them right now -- albeit all of them at a higher price... :S:

ShinyLoot's Launch Sale is nearing its end but for the moment it's still going on. Make sure to check their catalog of Linux games as most of them are on sale at a minimum of 15%-25% off; then there are Weekly Deals where a bunch of selected games are offered at 50% off; from Friday to Sunday it's Weekend Deal time; and finally from Tuesday to Thursday there are insane 80-85% off Daily Deals. Don't miss this opportunity to expand your indie DRM-free Linux games collection!

The Indie RPG Bundle from Bundle In A Box will still be around until next Tuesday. Until then pay what you want, starting at $1.99, to get Hack, Slash, Loot and Dungeon Fray:

image image

Both games are available as Desura keys and DRM-free downloads. If you beat the current $5 average you'll also get The Wizard's Lair and Telepath RPG: Servants of God:

image image

The former comes with a Desura key, and both can be downloaded DRM-free. Plus, five of the extras including art, OSTs, and strategy guides have already been achieved, and only 3 remain to be unlockeded as more bundles are sold.

LA Game Space's Experimental Game Pack 01 will end in just a matter of hours so there goes your last chance to get it for $15. 14 out of the 24 currently available titles have a Linux version, including games from many well-known creators such as Keita Takahashi (Katamari Damacy), or Santa Ragione (FOTONICA). A must have if you're into experimental games and game jams.

UPDATE: This pack's availability has been extended for a further week, so you can still get it until next Saturday.

image

Groupees' KISS 2 Bundle has been reloaded and it's available for a further week. The only game that's available for Linux is Grimind:

image

Since this is a build-a-bundle type of deal, you need to pick at least two games. To help you with the decision, we'll just say that both Ampu-Tea and Radical Roack will be available for Linux soon, according to their respective developers. Plus, the developers of the Shadows of the Vatican series don't completely rule out porting the games to Linux once all the episodes are released. This deal will be live until next Saturday so you've got enough time to choose your pick.

The new Humble Weekly Sale is featuring games from Kalypso Media. Among them the only one available for Linux (on Steam only) is Anna Extended Edition:

image

You only need to pay $1 to get the Steam key, along with its soundtrack.

image

Get Games is having the Cheap as Chips sale with more than 30 games for £3/4€/$5, four of which being available for Linux on Steam. They are Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition, Hotline Miami, Puddle, and Serious Sam 3: BFE:

image image image image

This offer ends next Monday at 9AM BST (8AM UTC), so be quick to get them before it's over.

image

There's a new Indie Royale bundle with a pair of Linux titles in it. It's The Alaska Bundle and it includes Electronic Super Joy and Flipper:

image image

Both games are redeemable as DRM-free downloads and Desura keys, and Electronic Super Joy also comes with a Steam key. To get them you need to beat the current $4.50/3.25€ minimum. You've got until next Wednesday to decide if it's worth to you.

image

Please welcome Flying Bundle to our Cheapskate World. They are debuting with the Flying "Welcome" Bundle, quite an interesting bundle indeed. Pay at least $1 and get BEEP (Steam key + Desura code) and Plith (Desura code only):

image image

If you can afford $3.50 or more you'll also obtain Ittle Dew and The Polynomial - Space of the Music, both coming as Steam keys:

image image

Both tiers hold a mystery game that will be revealed in the next days, so the final Linux titles count could be increased. We'll keep you informed if that's the case.

SavyGamer, in cooperation with Gameolith, has launched a bundle of its own: The SavyGamer Bundle. Pay $10/7.40€ or more and get 5 indie games, three of them natively playable on Linux. They are Frozen Synapse, Richard & Alice, and SpaceChem:

image image image

Remember that you'll need the Linux port of AGS to be able to play Richard & Alice. This game is only available as a DRM-free download, while the other two register on Steam. This bundle is only available until October 7th. Don't miss out!

image

The current IndieGameStand deal is literally running out of time at the time of writing. So, just for the very early readers of this column, know that you can pay what you want to obtain Proteus:

image

Pay more than $1 and get a Steam key for the game, or beat the $1.50 average to obtain the Proteus Dreams EP and some wallpapers.

UPDATE: The Proteus deal has already expired and the new one is featuring 99 Levels To Hell, a game whose developer hopes to bring to Linux soon.

However the really awesome news coming from IndieGameStand this week has been the opening of The IndieGameStand Store. A new store offering DRM-free Linux games is always good news and they are celebrating until the end of September with an opening sale, including 15 Linux titles -- please check our sales page for the complete list. As we said, the sale will be gone by next Tuesday so go check it before it is too late.

· The SteamPunk games & music bundle we talked about last week is still going on without any Linux content, but at least we could know that one of its games has been recently ported to Linux. We are referring to Greed Corp, whose Linux version will be debuting in an upcoming bundle next month. So TBS-loving cheapskates stay alert for when this bundle is launched!

· And finally, let's review our list of candidates for future IndieGameStand deals: SickBrick, Inverto, Rktcr, and Great Permutator. It could also be Party of Sin (allegedly coming to Linux) or Little Racers STREET (it will be ported to Linux whenever gets greenlit). As we said earlier the next deal must've probably gone live by the time you're reading this, so you tell us: is it one of those? :P

And that's all we had for you today! We'll be waiting for all of you next week, but in the meantime keep checking our sales page to be the first to know about a new great deal involving Linux games. Bye! ;)

Kalypso Media:  tropico 3 en 4 run out of the box for me on crossover, not tried the other yet.

I was curious, so I bought the main bundle, without Tropico 4. On your tip, I did a crossover install of Tropico 3 -- you're right. Everything worked perfectly, except the background video at the main menu; it was a bit laggy.

I was quite surprised actually. It was my first time using Steam via Wine. It seems like a decent game also, quite true to the original Tropico that I loved. So thanks Bumadar, for peaking my curiosity.
