Wizardry 6&7 RPG Games On Steam Using Dosbox

By -
So hot no the heels of GOG.com stating they aren't supporting Linux Night Dive Studios has put Wizardry 6 & Wizardry 7 onto Steam using Dosbox. Something that GOG.com feel is too hard to do across many distributions yet they have just done it.

Just be aware only Windows gets Wizardry 7 gold, Linux only gets the DOS version (source).

I love the descriptions used for them on Steam, looks like the original descriptions stating things like:
QuoteFULL-COLOR ANIMATED graphics
DIGITIZED sound (NO add-on cards required)
HARD DISK supported

That's right folks, hard disks are supported, you don't have to play them on floppy disks.

Wizardry 6 Features
  • 11 Races, 14 Professions (with rankings!)
  • Weaponry, Physical and Academia Skills
  • Six Spellbooks, 462 Combinations
  • Non-Player Characters
  • An arsenal of over 400 researched items
  • Varied Fighting Modes
  • Primary and Secondary Attack
  • Continuous Journey
  • Unlimited Backups
  • Save Game

Wizardry 7 Features
  • Outdoor Campaigns
  • Full Soundtrack and Effects
  • True Point & Click Mouse Interface
  • Auto-Mapping
  • Unprecedented Depth of Story

There is also this post on the Steam forums to ask for Linux support of Wizardry 8, go give it a +1 and let the developer know that you want it. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

It's also very weird that they use the same screenshots GOG uses, char names referencing GOG and all...

I'd really like a Linux version of Wizardry 8, though that one could be a bit more complex. When I tried it last in Wine a few years ago, there were problems with crashes, reproducible, when I moved to certain places in the game world. As long as I didn't look at those places, it was fine, but as soon as I changed the camera so that those would be in view, CRASH.

Still, I do have some nostalgia related to this game. It was one of the last I played before I kicked Windows off my HDD. :)

Argh. I don't have any hard disks. Only floppies and cassettes. :(

Oooo this looks like a winner -- played the wizardry 8 demo a while back under wine and wanted more, but wasn't willing to buy windows-only games any more.

It´s awesome to have classics on Steam for Linux! Super Frog HD is out now too, I hope Sega make the Genesis classics available for Linux too.
