Broken Glass Studios announced a few days ago that The Dark Mod Standalone has reached 2.0 and is available for download, so now stealth game fans can get in on the action on Linux easily.

QuoteWe at Broken Glass Studios are happy to announce the release of TDM 2.0, a free, open-source, completely standalone stealth game!!

Standalone: First and most importantly, The Dark Mod is now completely standalone, which means you no longer need to own Doom3 to play it! We have spent a tremendous amount of time and energy replacing all the sounds, textures, particle effects, and models that we had been using. Hopefully this will open up a whole new audience of people who didn’t want to have to purchase a different game in order to try The Dark Mod.

See full post for all the info.

About
THE DARK MOD 2.0 is a free, first-person stealth game inspired by the Thief series by Looking Glass Studios. It recreates the essence of the original Thief games on a more modern engine. Both a game and a mission-creation platform, The Dark Mod allows players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe.

I have done a bit on the training mission they include for easy installing, the graphics are quite pretty and it seems to flow quite easily. The only issue currently I can see is the loading times are a bit on the longer side.

Has anyone else tried it, what are your thoughts on it? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I was super happy when I heard about this. I haven't had a chance to download it again yet, but it'll be nice to not have Doom 3 taking up space anymore :D

Played a bit of the mod back when it was a mod. Should be interesting to see how it plays now that it is its own thing.

I don't imagine the game itself will change much as a result of stripping out the remaining Doom 3 assets and jumping over to the open source version of the engine.

There are other gameplay and asset enhancements that are a part of this release though, which will be neat to check out.

Man, this is a slow download. Using the automated updater it's running at 4 kbs (As opposed to the 1mbs usual). Still, pretty excited, since I never got a chance to play Thief.

The gameplay is a bit different to Thief. The game has evolved a very different feel, but it still harkens back to the same style of stealth oriented play with a bunch of extra supporting mechanics thrown in. Lock picking in particular is very nice.

the updater is pain yeah. some mirrors its picking are super slow, so you have to babysit it and restart all the time and hope its picking faster server for some files.

There is a torrent for this standalone 2.0 version which should be a much faster download. This torrent have executables for both Windows and Linux.

Before you start playing rename the folder to darkmod otherwise saves will not work.

Downloaded, but it's pretty rough. 5-10 second sound lag and it keeps crashing when I change settings. Seems fun enough that I'll push on though XP
