Leadwerks the game creation kit that was crowdfunded has now entered its 3.1 beta state and has early builds available for Linux.

It is using GTK for the UI and it looks like it has some ways to go yet:

more than just marketing speak????  i suggest that you look closer... look at the forum... not one negative critique, not one critical  comment to be found...  but i forgot, most of the relevant stuff on the forum is hidden from public view...  even those with access will attest that like his own mini totalitarian state run press, all critical comments are censored out, and the poster (usually a licensed user) is banned... the kickstarter campaign was filled with deceptive hype, videos showing scenes from projects made with he graphically superior previous version, scenes which the current graphically devolved version couldn't come close to rendering...  i suggest that you open your eyes... take a close look at the demo... then look for other options... i bought into the Leadwerks promise years ago with Leadwerks 2... that promise has been abandoned with total disregard... my opinion is that the linux crowd will get more of the same... at a substantially higher price point...

contrary to what you say, you don't seem to understand anything above... it's a fact based assessment from someone who has first hand knowledge, from someone who has paid to license the software, and from someone who has been programming since the days of the ole C-64, TI-99/4A, AppleII, Osborn, etc... intended to cut through the hype and give the facts to those who are prospective licensees in the Linux community...  you don't believe me, then feel free to go ahead and spend your money for a license... join the forum, where you can see all the comments, meet all the people... go behind the wall and  find out first hand the facts instead of the spin... then you'll be in a better position to judge my comments than you are in now...

Leadwerks is about to release 3.1, with much improved graphics than 3.0... still no terrain editor facilities for placing trees and such as there was in Leadwerks 2, but on the surface it looks a lot better than what was debuted in that "Darkness Awaits" thing...  still, I must ask... after 3 years of progress, and for a lot more money... does this

"Just curious : how will work LE3 updates for people not updating (or updating later ).

Or must people be forced to update?"

the answer, if given, will shed some insight into what's actually happening at leadwerks...

since you won't say what proof you want, nor will you get up and download the Leadwerks 3 trial and compare it for yourself, i'll take the time to prove to you the points i made above... but ilm doing it not just for you, but for all the prospective licensees out there who are considering parting with their hard earned monies based in the spin they are seeing... maybe they, unlike you, will be able see the facts behind the spin...

1 - look at the picture in the Kickstarter campaign... can ya see the promise of making games with Leadwerks on Linux.also ..  can ya see the forest and the trees in the screenshot... can ya see the grass... the skybox and clouds...  doesn't that give you the impression that you'll be able to make scenes like the one pictured with Leadwerks 3... after all, you could in the Leadwerks2 editor...

As a matter of fact, this scene was taken from a Leadwerks2 project...  Unfortunately, despite giving the impression that this is a scene from Leadwerks 3, and that you'll be able to do this in Leadwerks 3, the fact is that Leadwerks 3.0 is incapable of making such scenes... THERE IS NO TERRAIN EDITOR, NO TERRAIN AT ALL in Leadwerks 3.0... PERIOD...  

Leadwerks 3 is graphically devolved version, incapable of the graphics you see above that was possible in Leadwerks 2... download the trial and see for yourself... find a skybox in the trial...




That's just one proof of spin vs. facts (there's more)...

Now if dat aint proof enough for ya... wait a few more days,  Leadwerks for Linux will be out on the sixth of January... then, if there's a trial version, try to come close to the scene depicted above... hahahahahahaaaa... 

better yet, take a look at some chatter from the forum... exactly along the same lines as what i'm saying...

PROOF #2 

two images from the Kickstarter ad...  the top one from a game cakked Hoodwinks... made with Leadwerks2, graphics not possible in Leadwerks 3.0   the one immediately above from another Leadwerks 2 game, Combat Helicopter... also with graphics not doable in Leadwerks3...  

in the video clip you also see sequences from a zombie first person shooter made with Leadwerks2, not 3... with visual aspect not possible in Leadwerks3.0

as a matter of fact, the only sequence in the clip that was made with Leadwerks 3.0 is from the Darkness Awaits demo... compare that with some of the stuff you see made from the previous version...  HULLO!!!

now in all fairness, the pending update improves on the graphics bringing it closer to the capabilities of the previous version... but, and YOU WILL SEE THIS JAN 6th, there is no capability for the terrain editor to add trees, grass, etc as in the previous version...

ALL OF THE PROOF YOU NEED WILL BE AVAILABLE IN A FEW DAYS...

it's funny to see that you're enjoying poking holes in someone's attempt to show the facts as opposed to going along with the party line when the party line is deceptive and misleading...  i don't understand why... maybe you have stock in Leadwerks, or maybe you're just a fanboy... whatever the reason for your gullibility...

Not one critical comment is available on the public forum... have ya ever wondered how this could be... is Leadwerks perfect :)
or is it more likely that any critical questions or comments are removed... 

all press releases strictly controlled... this guy has followed me (and others) around the net trying to remove any critiques of his deceptive advertising practices in this latest occurrences...  IT'S COMMON TACTICS FOR SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO CONTROL NEWS AND OPINION TO DISCREDIT THE CHARACTER OF HIS/HER DETRACTORS...

I COULDN'T GO AROUND SAYING THESE THINGS PUBLICLY IF THEY WEREN'T TRUE... 

think about it... or don't, these comments aren't being made for the benefit of you in particular...  but for the prospective licensee... so that they'll have some insight from an experienced Leadwerks licensee...

Just FYI I did get an email from a Leadwerks rep to ask me to remove posts like those. I refused since no post so far has done more than try to explain differences between the versions.

Take from that what you will, but it does seem like they are trying to silence critics.

that's all i'm trying to point out...

and sure, some of the stuff is doable... a reasonably competent coder can code in the forest and foliage... i can add shadered effects myself...  but, AT LEAST LEADWERKS 2 EDITOR HAD THIS CAPABILITY...  and, those screenies give the impression that Leadwerks 3.0 can do this in its editor, which was a selling point of the previous versions editor... IT CANNOT.. 

and that's exactly what i'm trying to show (amongst other things)...  the FACTS... that's all...

and it seems as if the facts differ a bit from the ad hype and spin... and when the Josh actively campaigns to quiet down any fact based critique, then the prospective licensee should be made aware of these facts... in spite of the campaign to silence him...
