So it seems a few major tech websites (and Seattle Times) have had some hands on time with a SteamBox prototype. A few are Engadget, The Verge and Seattle Times, there is probably more by now.
We all knew they where going for an Android styled approach as they stated before any company can make a Steam box, so the fact that some will be announced next year shouldn't be a surprise.
The prototype machine looks very similar to the new Xbox and Playstation consoles that's for sure. The Verge seem to have pretty important info as well they where able to share!
The first set of SteamBox's that people will be able to buy will be announced in January next year and some may even be available midway through next year. According to the report most OEMs will be making smaller boxes than Valve's prototypes without so much power in them,
At the CES 2014 there will be games announced that will natively support SteamOS. It looks like no games from Valve directly will be SteamOS exclusive either.
I didn't know this either, but the Steam Controller has a gyroscope in it to enable motion controls, I hope games don't come out that require some sort of shaking of the controller, motion controls annoy the hell out of me. I dislike having to wave my arms around like a lunatic to play a game.
It's a little annoying reporting on someone else's news and hopefully in the future I will get my hands on one to write it all up and test it properly for you, until then The Verge article explains it all the best in my eyes.

Perhaps they learned their lesson with The orange box, L4D, etc on PS3. Exclusives (whether planned or not) aren't valves style anymore.

Personally, I'm just waiting on a price range so I know when my broke ass can get one :P I've owned a Wii and a Kinect, and I've been disappointed with motion controls twice...
As for exclusivity, that seems to go against the Linux spirit, and valve's stance against the "walled garden" approach.

As it is a prototype there will be another case in future hopefully. As this one is IMHO very ugly -.-

Well since they are supposed to be giving away SteamOS for free you could build you own. The whole thing is off the shelf kit. To fit the GPU in there they put it on a right angle riser and knocked a hole in the case for GPU ventilation.
Mobo is either mATX or ITX, possibly ITX as those usually have some microPCIe card slots so that they can be fitted with laptop wireless cards.

games won't be exclusive forever, but I think they will make it "beta testing or time exclusives", like Dota2 was on windows during its beta stage.
Is something people understand, they gotta make things work well first on their OWN OS and OWN controller. Then they become widely available for everyone else.

This deal has gone sour, looks like Valve used us. It's a custom OS like Android with no assurance of compatibility with desktop Linux. And with no exclusive titles there is zero reason to even use it. Linux users should be outraged at the hope valve fed us when it was actually poison.
