SpringRTS Open Source RTS Engine 0.95 Released

By -
After nearly 7 months SpringRTS has pushed out the 0.95 release, now might be a good time to check on it.

For those unaware SpringRTS started off as an engine for playing Total Annihilation in 3D and expanded to be it's own full RTS engine with lots of game packs available.

Major Features of 0.95
  • customizeable loadscreen
  • map border rendering (/mapborder command)
  • new datadir structure
  • bugfixes & speedups

Sadly my love for SpringRTS died out long ago as their playerbase seemed to shrink rather a lot. That coupled with people mostly playing one gamepack (which is still mostly a rip-off of Total Annihilation IP) and one map.

For those who love open source games though SpringRTS + Kernel Panic or Zero-K are good ones to try.

You can see Zero-K in action here:

I still get a kick out of Balanced Annihilation and I'm slowly learning my way around EvolutionRTS. The various AIs can still give a good opponent (although I usually play my single commander against two AI commanders and ensure that the mode is set to Kill Everything, as I'm generally effective at finding and destroying the AI commanders while raiding). Shard AI on EvolutionRTS totally kills me every time - I'm not efficient enough yet with my resource/production balance.
