Super Meat Boy Finally Hits Steam For Linux

By -
It has finally happened, Team Meat have enabled the Linux version of Super Meat Boy onto Steam!

Super Meat Boy is a tough as nails platformer where you play as an animated cube of meat who's trying to save his girlfriend (who happens to be made of bandages) from an evil fetus in a jar wearing a tux. Our meaty hero will leap from walls, over seas of buzz saws, through crumbling caves and pools of old needles.

Ryan Gordon gave the lowdown on the update version:
QuoteSo there's a massive Mac/Linux update for Super Meat Boy, just in time for it to be 80% off on Steam:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/40800/

Here's the rundown of new stuff.

- Linux version now available on Steam. If you already own the game for Windows or Mac on Steam, you get the Linux version for free right now. Otherwise, your three dollars gets you three platforms of Super Meat Boy, plus SteamOS support some day.
- Now using SDL2, which means...
- ...game controller support that actually works!
- Tons of bug fixes.
- Super Meat World now works on Linux.
- 64-bit support on Mac OS X.
- Steamworks support on Linux (32-bit only, not my fault!)
- Fullscreen support on Mac OS X.
- Better fullscreen support on Linux.
- Mac framerate should be dramatically better.

Updated Humble Bundle builds coming soon, but I'll probably wait a day or two for Steam feedback before packaging it up.

Please be gentle: a lot of code changed, as part of this work was smashing Tommy's Mac port and my Linux port together and fixing things up from there. If you find bugs, please report them at https://bugzilla.icculus.org/ and I'll try to sort them out asap.

Now I have been critical of Tommy from Team Meat in the past but people change, it's now up so all is well for me. Looks like a pretty decent update as well so it's not a simple pushing of the original build either.

Excellent stuff.

It doesn't appear to be live on Linux yet: while the game is listed in the library, it doesn't install anything and gives the usual message "missing executable".

I asked Ryan Gordon about this earlier this morning and he said it should be fixed later today.

Well it was in a Humble Bundle before, so there was a Linux version already, but I wanted it on Steam for Linux :)

I really didn't know there was a Linux version, or at least I don't remember knowing.... anyway, I will just give a little boost to my Steam Wallet and buy it now! :D

It happens with some games (with me 3 or 4 times), they appear as available but it take some time until they are "really" available, we only have to wait a little bit. By the way, my respect to Ryan Gordon once more!

Also the platform has changed some as well as the release of SDL 2.

i have it on my list but i will not install this game since the devs was the worst and now they want it after SteamOS not for the sake of the customers just the sake of steamOS

Well maybe they were pissed at Linux, because Canonical sold Super Meat Boy for about 1 year in the Ubuntu Store without telling/paying the Devs?

Yep, maybe. Seems like a legit reason to be pissed, if you ask me. It's at the very least understandable, as opposed to the unfounded hostility we've seen from other devs over the years, even recently.

Great!

There are other games which got a Linux port through the Humble Bundle offer but lack a Steam Linux release.

For example, I'd like to see Dustforce on Steam. Yet, the developers never answered questions concerning a Steam release.

While I know that many hate Steam (I do not), I'd also like to see the Humble Bundle guys to change their terms: If a game is available on Steam (Windows or Mac) already, then the Linux port _must_ be released to Steam as well.
Keeping the DRM-free alternatives, of course!

A complete list of missing games from the HIBs has been given to Ryan "Icculus" Gordon today on Google+ in case he can help make their way on Steam Linux.

Ryan says the HIB builds will also receive updates.

Downloading now! Psyched like no other :D

Unlike the other Steam versions of Super Meat Boy, this new Linux version does NOT run without the client, so it's not DRM-free anymore. That's really disappointing.
