The only aim in Rust is to survive. To do this you will need to overcome struggles such as hunger, thirst and cold. Build a fire. Build a shelter. Kill animals for meat. Protect yourself from other players. Create alliances with other players and together form a town. Whatever it takes to survive.
It looks like an interesting game and it's good to finally see it on Linux as well as Steam. It's a very early version though so be wary. I can't wait to check it out personally, have you tried it yet?

lol the garry mod on linux can be piss poor.. At the moment it is broken for every linux user so I wouldn't buy this yet if i was you

yeah they broke it for linux and mac with the latest update.
but they are working on it and garry is respoding to bugreports nicely so nothing to worry about.
