Steam Client Gets A Major Update

By -
The Steam client got a major update recently with some pretty needed features which I am sure will please many users!

This one in particular got me:
QuoteOn game launch, if there is an update available but we haven't started downloading it yet, ask the user if they want to launch the existing bits or wait for the update.

How it took them this long to add in that option is crazy, it will be a much needed feature for SteamOS I'm sure.

QuoteAdd option to let other games download while a game is running (this is a per-game setting)

Also a great addition for playing a single-player game and downloading updates which won't interfere with gameplay.

There is a vast amount more fixed too, here are the Linux specific fixes:
QuoteFix paste pasting stale text.
Fix Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V in client-hosted web page text controls.
Fix incorrect foregrounding of a blank window in some -silent startup cases.
Fixed corrupt check box and radio button images on web pages
Fixed game controller hot-plugging not working
Fix runtime bootstrap rewriting so that if this process interrupted, steam is not left in an inconsistent non-startable state.
Fixed crash on linux if /proc/net/route isn't available
Fixed missing cursor in Akaneiro when using the overlay
Fixed Steam failing to re-launch on shutdown if some open sockets took too long to close
The overlay now saves and restores the games gamma settings when invoked
Fixed overlay not displaying in some runtime configurations

Pretty decent list.

If you have been holding off because of stability issues, try Steam again on Linux now.

Steam still has so many bugs and annoying things I am still not willing to report all those things. ( ok I did not try THIS version, but the changelog is small ).

What about starting and even worse stopping steam?
Starting steam takes ages, what the hell are they doing there? It looks like they download all settings for all games one has and with more games it gets slower and slower and slower.
Even worse is shutting down your computer while steam runs. It takes upp to 60 seconds to "convince" steam to stop and let the computer shutdown. Thats really annoying!

And all those automated updates which you often cannot stop and order the right way, especially if you start using the steam workshop. Sometimes you are allowed to stop and order things , sometimes you are not :-/ . Yesterday I had to wait 20 Minutes for a Dota2 update just to be "allowed" to start loading a mappack from the steamworkshop for serioussam2 which I wanted to play.

Only good thing is, steam brings many games to Linux and nearly all of them work really good.

Steam loads within a few seconds for me so not sure what issues you are facing, I don't even have a strong processor either, AMD APU. Same with shutting down, it's my irc client that slows my shutdown not Steam.

You can select what games auto update in the properties, you have been able to do this for as long as I can remember as well.

yes yes you can mange the automated download, but what I wrote about is that this does not work in all cases!
I had automatic updates on for Dota2 but I wanted to play somehting from the steam workshop. Now I first had to wait for dota... Usually you have the option to order the downloads but .. somehow obviously not in all cases.
And this was just an example for many things in steam were you have to wait. But it looks like this is not a linux only problem as I saw similar things at a friend who uses windows. For me steam always means waiting waiting waiting in too many cases.

Steam starts up in a few secons for you ? Unbelievable, on all(5) our computers it always needs more than a minute to start/login and whatever it does there, more 2 minutes. Shutdown steam itself is fast if you do it via steam menu. But if I shutdown my computer and forgot to stop steam manually I am lost and have to wait patiently for the shutdown. ( also the same on all of our computers )

I've no problem with startup and shutdown of Steam either. Running on latest Ubuntu.
