Crystal Picnic Development Turns 1

By -
For those who haven't been following, Nooskewl's retro RPG/action platformer hybrid Crystal Picnic celebrated its first year of development a couple of days ago.

Rising from the ashes of Nooskewl's canceled "baryon" project, Crystal Picnic's story begins as duck and rabbit duo Egbert and Frogbert attempt to discover why ants are stealing from the Crystal Castle. Along the way, they're joined by rabbit Bisou, and together the trio continue their adventure.

In "field mode", the game plays much as one would expect from a JRPG style game, an overhead view of the player's party as they explore the world around them, but combat encounters are played as a side scrolling action platformer.

The alpha is taking shape already, with a solid gameplay foundation as well as charming animation and an enjoyable soundtrack. Alpha updates have been occurring at the rate of about two a week for the past month or so. The most recent update, Alpha 21, includes Egbert's first tier abilities (featured in the video above), magic regeneration and ability selection being included in saves.

More in-progress videos can be found on Nooskewl's YouTube channel and the Nooskewl Vine account.

Crystal Picnic can be pre-ordered with alpha access from the Nooskewl website!
