That's right Duke fans Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition now has online multiplayer complete with deathmatch and cooperative game modes. Don't you love seeing that little penguin in trailers!

You can face off with up to 8 players online and this is cross-platform Linux, Mac & Windows goodness with "hundreds" (their claim) of user made maps in the Steam Workshop. That's one way to extend the life-time of a game!

I personally played it many years ago in its original form before the expansion packs and upgrades so I cannot wait to go through it again, especially now I can frag you horrible lot online!

About
QuoteDuke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition is the definitive compilation of the landmark first-person shooter that includes enhanced versions of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition and three unique expansion packs as well as the original version of the classic game. The iconic Duke Nukem battles it out against a slew of alien foes in the original four episode "Atomic Edition" single-player campaign and three over-the-top expansion packs that take the loudmouthed hero to a tropical paradise, a winter wonderland, and even Washington D.C. Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition features polished OpenGL visuals, native compatibility with modern PC and Mac computers, Steam Achievements, and Steam Cloud support. Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition will continue to receive feature updates including Steamworks-enabled online multiplayer, new achievements and integration of additional Duke Nukem 3D expansion packs.

It's also a sweet 60% off right now, you can't miss this one folks even I will be firing it up I think!

So, who will join me online?

Also for those that don't know there is an open source engine called EDuke32 that you can use with the resources you get with your copy. Although this won't have Steam's matchmaking stuff for online. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Wait, this only started being able to use Steam's online multiplayer features now? What was the point of it before then if EDuke32 already offered almost all of the same features and the whole reason anyone might want to play this was for the Steamworks integration?

The point was that it was in steam and a simple click to install, thats about it. EDuke32 still has more features I think. I have been using eduke32 for years but I'm looking forward to this steam version because I have many friends that are not into computers and cant figure out how to install and setup (hires textures, etc...) eduke32. Steam offers them a one click experience and that will be good for them. But yes there really is no benefit that I can see if you are already an eduke32 user.

As far as I know eduke32 had no working multiplayer the last years. Especially not cross platform!
I must say that I am very disappointed that this multiplayer feature took this long for the MegaTron edition which si the only real feature over Eduke32. And I think too Eduke32 with hires pack looks/plays better then this MegaTron edition.
