Kingdom Come: Deliverance, First CryEngine Game To Support Linux

By crakkhead -
The Kickstarter page for the open world sandbox RPG built on the CryEngine promises Linux support.

From the Kingdom Come: Deliverance Kickstarter page, the game is a (emphasis mine)
Quote[r]ealistic single-player RPG set in the medieval Europe. Open-world sandbox with period accurate melee combat. Dungeons & no Dragons.

QuoteA first-person, open world, realistic RPG that will take you to Medieval Europe in a time of great upheaval and strife. A humble, young blacksmith loses everything to war. As he tries to fulfill the dying wish of his father, Fate drags him into the thick of a conspiracy to save a kidnapped king and stop a bloody conflict. You will wander the world, fighting as a knight, lurking in the shadows as a rogue, or using the bard’s charm to persuade people to your cause. You will dive deep into a sweeping, epic, nonlinear story from Daniel Vávra, an award-winning designer from the Mafia series. Our unique, first-person combat system lets you wield sword or bow in both one-on-one skirmishes and large-scale battles. All of this - and more - brought to life beautifully with next-gen visuals delivered via Cryengine.

Summary

  • Planned platforms: PC, Xbox One*, PS4*, Mac, Linux
  • Release date: Q4,  2015 on PC, Mac and Linux
  • Approx. gameplay time: 30 hours (Act 1), 70+ hours (all 3 acts)

* Publishing on closed platforms is subject to approval by the platform holder. This can also influence release date there.

According to the CryEngine Wikipedia page, this would be the first game built on that engine that supports Linux. Almost two years after Phoronix reported that there is a native Linux port of the CryEngine (Mike from Phoronix shared no source for this information, so Phoronix as usual are speculating), there might actually be a game now for our platform. That would be great news.

In my opinion, the goals are way too ambitious for the requested funding and from a developer without any track record as far as I can tell, but it is already successfully funded, so build your own opinion and watch the pitch video below.

We really need a update on the state of the Cryengine port to Linux. I know the job was up, and its not up anymore..but does that mean they found someone? or did they take it down because they didn't? Anyway.. a update about it would be nice to hear. Also if they are porting the engine, i am sure that they are testing one of their games on it as well. So it could be possible that they may release something to Linux (Crysis, Crysis 2) when it is finished. Who knows. WE JUST NEED A UPDATE. The developers who use cryengine def do.

I hope they come through with the Linux version; that would certainly big a big milestone for us :)

Well the closest game I can think off to Kingdom come is "Chivalry" which uses the U3 engine and its goal was just 50k, but got to 85k back in 2012:

So yea is possible to make good looking games with good mechanics without extremely huge budgets. However KC will be like an upgrade to this one and hopefully real linux support this time and of course steamOS/steampad.

I have emailed Crytek about the Linux version of CryEngine, no reply yet, doubt I will get one from them.

It's a good initiative! The main reason I like GOL is because you and others attempt direct communication with the source, so we can all get confirmation :)

Quoting: Quote from n30p1r4t3They've already hit their goal and because of that; I'm a backer.

You know that Kickstarter doesn't charge you any money unless a campaign reaches their goal, right? If everyone waited for a project to reach their goal, nothing would ever get successfully funded.

Of course. I just like to have my expenditures mapped out so I know when and how much I have to pay. Budgeting and all that.

I've been trying to contact them for several months asking for comment on whether the position was filled and the state of possible Linux support for current/future CryEngine versions, but haven't as yet gotten any response.

Crytek has an email for general inquiries, an email for press related inquiries, and an email for CryEngine related inquiries. Then there are three further emails one can use in the press section. Have you guys tried all six emails?
