Minecraft gets its first development snapshot for 2014 and it features some pretty interesting changes.
Changelog

For me Minecraft still lacks monster types, there just aren't enough to keep combat interesting. Not only that, but it also still feels lacking on the exploration side of things sure NPC villages add to it, but we need more!
As for the secret features, going by their twitters it sounds like teleportation will be in vanilla (non-modded) Minecraft, finally.
They also have a settings menu which makes the screen go through lots of different graphical styles, a couple look like 3D and VR support, so I reckon they will come soon-ish too.

You hit the nail on the head with both monster types and exploration. It's been a while since I've felt like hitting up Minecraft knowing that the best you can hope to find in your survival maps is a temple. It just lacks adventure and surprise.
Still, I do keep a couple of servers still running for my kids to play about on and they love the creative modes, so Minecraft still has legs. A lot of legs.
