Here is the latest instalment of Steam's Hardware Survey, as usual we do our monthly thing and compare it and talk about it and make sure you know not to use it as a hard figure.

Linux results for December 2013
Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit 0.41% +0.05%
Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS 64 bit 0.19% +0.02%
Linux 64 bit 0.12% +0.02%
Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit 0.09% -0.02%
Linux Mint 16 Petra 64 bit 0.08% +0.08%
Ubuntu 13.10 0.08% +0.01%
Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS 0.08% +0.01%
Linux Mint 15 Olivia 64 bit 0.06% -0.04%

Total: 1.11%%
Last Month: 0.98%

My thoughts on it
Higher than last month, highest it has been since May so that's looking quite positive. I still think Steam Machines this year will bump it up to at least the 1.5% mark and slowly move up from there.

Things to note
The Other category may contain a few of the smaller Linux distro's like Fedora, Gentoo and Arch for example.

Other 0.74% +0.08%

Especially when before the main stats did contain quite a few more Linux distro's it's safe to assume some of the % is Linux as well.

Just be aware these results will probably not be that accurate as we don't know how they do their percentage results, they could be rounding up, rounding down or truncating the percentages. So a 0.5% could actually be nearly 0.6% as it could be 0.59% but they could do no rounding and simply truncate it.

Also it won't be every Steam user (it's a survey not a full statistic) so it can be as simple as not actually showing the survey to many Linux people. Let's face it we know they don't survey 100% of their user base, only a small fraction of it, so bear that in mind as well. Personally I am still yet to see it under Linux so it's not counting me that's for sure and I am logged in every day!

Lastly Linux users typically shy away from any form of DRM, so you can bet there is a large bunch of Linux users who just simply refuse to use Steam. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

That is great news! But it should also be noted that the surveys seems to appear on every Windows client, only Linux (and maybe Mac, I don't know) seems to have a problem with it....

"The Other category may contain a few of the smaller Linux distro's like Fedora, Gentoo and Arch for example. "

Arch gets counted as "Linux 64 bit" at least on my Arch boxes. I have heard some users have their Arch boxes set to identify themselves as Arch but that doesn't seem to be the norm. I don't think calling them smaller distros is the way that should be worded either. Less represented distros.. there that sounds better.

I used to get them in linux a lot but I havent seen one on my mac or in linux in months. I open steam everyday on both and I still dont see them. I booted up windows for the first time in months and got the steam survey first time I opened steam.

the increase is probably the steamOs and steam machines lol

I never get them on Linux native, though - I always get them using Wine in Linux. Quite strange.
AX Redneck Jan 2, 2014
I never get them at all, not in Wine nor natively, though i run Steam in Wine frequently
Half-Shot Jan 2, 2014
Got surveyed today in wine, but I cancelled it quickly before I was placed in the windows pool.

It will be better, when will steam add field "wine", which we will know, how many people will use wine.
