This is supremely awesome news, Project Zomboid has not only released a major performance patch, but they have also opened up a beta on Steam for the online multiplayer!
Release 23 Highlights
Release 23 is their Stable update that adds amongst a billion bug-fixes a massive improvement to multithreaded rendering performance.
It also adds in the ability to create light sources, the first and currently only one is a torchlight.
Campfires set you and zombies alight now, don't run over fire.
Custom maps are now supported.
I have tested Release 23 and for me it runs beautifully, I am pleased to see them polish it up nicely.
See the full change-log for release 23 here.
Online multiplayer update
Something to note is that this is really, really rough and bugs will happen as will cheating. The good thing is you can setup a white-list to allow select people on.
There's an awesome post by a community guy on how to setup a PZ server on Linux here.
See the full online multiplayer post here.
You will need to opt into the onlinebeta branch on Steam to get it, opting into that branch removes everything else so be warned, it's a mutliplayer only branch!
So in the future when this is added to their stable release, who is up for a GOL Project Zomboid server?

I really love the look of this game, and the multiplayer option makes it even more attractive.

Are they still updating the Desura version? Because if not, I need to go complain.

Quoting: TimAre they still updating the Desura version? Because if not, I need to go complain.
Desura gets the more stable updates as Desura doesn't support multiple branches they cannot put the multiplayer version up there apparently.
So it's a Desura issue.

Exactly.
We wish we could get the test builds pushed towards Desura users too, but we have to hope Desura lets developers upload different branches of their games (public, optional beta, etc) at some point in the future. It would make a lot of devs and Desura users happy.
Make a fuzz at Desura's forums to support the cause :)
As a small note: I've seen many Desura users complaining that they will not get the Game on Steam because they don't want their DRM.
That is not the case as Project Zomboid does not use Steamworks, which is the actual Steam DRM.
The Steam client itself would be used to download the game (or beta builds). Once downloaded, you can play the game without Steam running in the background. Basically just like the Desura client.
Thanks for the article, GOL!
