In a move that has delighted me, Valve has split up the Steam Hardware Survey to better show each platform individually.

So, we now don't have this random "other" in the main list, it seems some of it is now accounted for in each lists total, hooray!

Something to note is that it doesn't show the lesser represented distro's, I for example use Manjaro which isn't shown.

So, to look back on January Linux was actually on 1.34%, not 1.11%!

It's good to finally get a more accurate look at the Steam stats. I hope they keep this in place in a few days for February's statistics.

I for one am glad to see 32 bit linux going away. Sadly Windows is slow to catch up. And that is not likely to change considering the situation in China.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but, the totals leave 0.10% unaccounted for?

There's Wine somewhere among "Windows XP 32 bit 5.96% -0.09%"

These are the proper totals, including what was originally in "Other" since they took it out.

Yeah, but 95.00 + 3.56 + 1.34 = 99.90.

So 0.10% of the statistics submitted don't have an OS?

Although I no longer bother with Steam in Wine, I used to run it in a 64 bit prefix and using Windows 7 as the default OS. Pretty sure Wine statistics will be all over the place depending on what is needed for certain games.

Hah didn't even notice that you're right!

I was surveyed in Steam whilst in Manjaro a few weeks ago rather surprisingly, so I guess I'm in the "Linux 64bit" category. Never had the survey pop up whilst in Linux before and I was in the Steam Linux Client beta way back when so I've only had to wait ~16 months for that! Maybe the glitch with not sending surveys to Linux clients has been resolved? My guess is it hasn't and I was just lucky to get the survey because I'd expect the Linux share to rise a little once that particular glitch (or whatever is behind it) has actually been sorted out. I'm pretty sure that there's a large amount of Linux only users that still haven't seen the survey ever. I've had it multiple times whilst in Windows in the last year. When I was still gaming on Windows a lot I used to get the survey most months. Now I'm mostly gaming on Linux I've seen it once in Linux and 3-4 times in Windows (which I rarely touch these days). Usually I see it Windows when I haven't booted into it for months and the survey pops up as soon as the Steam client loads. Most annoying.

32bit in general needs to die. It'll be 30 years old next year (the Intel 80386 was the first 32bit processor, released in 1985). That alone is a reason to kill off 32bit. Everything really should be 64bit by now. In fact, where's my 64bit flying car and/or hoverboard? Hollywood lied to me!!!!!!!!

There's absolutely no way these include all the 'Other' numbers, unless you believe that absolutely no one is running Steam on a 32-bit Linux other than Ubuntu 13.10 (and I know I am).

I wonder how the 39.26% "other" in the Linux version statistics breaks down. It apparently got a sizable bump this month (+7.62%!)..

I wonder if Kubuntu shows up as Ubuntu or other.
Edgar 27 Feb 2014
There are 10 different windows versions in the survery... that's the good thing about that OS, developers only need one computer for testing, as there isn't any fragmentation :D

thanks for the news, I'm looking at the stats right now and CPU frequency and Physical CPUs now shows data for each platform as well and it is quite interesting:
- Intel is slightly more common in Linux systems compared to Windows system
- Linux users must still have quite a few P4 around (Intel 3.7 GHz or faster)
- surprisingly the number of system with a single core CPU is increasing among Linux user (the percentage consistently increased from 3.73% (Sep13) to 4.51% (Jan14)

Why the hate for 32 bit? 32 bit programs are often faster, and use less RAM than 64 bit ones. Besides, who cares? Both work perfectly fine. (And yes, I do have a 32 bit processor in one of my computers.)

I still have several 32 bit only computers on my network simply due to the hardware. Some people forget how popular Linux is on older hardware. I also only have one or two machines on my network which have more than 4 GB of RAM, which is one of the main things that makes 64 bit attractive.

Not hate, but 64bit only in the future is inevitable as games grow. It can also create issues for some developers having to support both.

Also, I can't say i've heard of 32bit programs being faster than 64bit?

I was sure I had seen benchmarks showing that 32 bit was faster for a significant number of programs, but a phoronix search showed this http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_1210_3264&num=1 where 64 bit is indeed almost always faster by a significant margin. So looks like I was wrong.

I thought your comment was odd heh, I always remember 64bit being better than 32bit. It is not just more RAM that makes it worthwhile.
LostParadise 28 Feb 2014
BTW, when the survey appeared to me, i was counted as Linux 64bit (I use Arch Linux)

I wonder if Kubuntu shows up as Ubuntu or other.

check your cat /etc/lsb-release

the part where it says:
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Arch Linux"

thats detected, so if you have Kubuntu there, then you are not in the Ubuntu list

people without lsb package are under general "Linux 64bit" or "Linux 32bit"

Sometimes loving something is more about hating everything else than really loving anything.

I get the survey every month as soon as I start Steam using Wine.
I never get it on the native client.
CoolHand 28 Feb 2014
I've been using Steam for several months on a couple of different (64bit) machines, a wine install (for Skyrim), and very occasionally a Windows install. The only time I've been polled was the ultra-rare occasion that I used the Windows install... If there's really a bug where it doesn't properly poll the Linux clients, that seems like a serious issue concerning there chances to convince devs to port over to Linux!!
