Steam has now taken a first small step towards increasing awareness of their SteamOS.
The Linux category is now "Linux + SteamOS" and it's easy to see why they have done it. Linux probably doesn't mean a lot to your average Joe so adding in "+ SteamOS" seems quite logical to me.
Not only does it increase awareness of SteamOS games, but it will also show your average Joe that Linux games run on SteamOS and vice-versa.
I do wonder how long it will be until the "Linux" bit is taken out, but then they would need to replace the little tux icon on games with the SteamOS icon too. Maybe they will add the SteamOS icon in addition to the tux icon, what do you think?

Well I think it's quite logic. They are showing their distro to the big public, telling them "Hey, we have an easy solution if you want to try another o.s. and play some games without thinking too much or complicating your life".Why are you suffering? The latest news regarding AMD's open source drivers for that card has shown remarkable improvement. Things are looking up quite a bit.
Steam OS is VALVE's Distro... I don't think that shows any kind of disrespect to other distros. After all Steam is a private platform. And as far as I'm concerned, and as long as Valve keep pushing AMD to improve linux drivers, I'm happy.
Gosh, amd 7770 + linux.. what a suffering.
And get worse performance on newer hardware? I do give props to how fast the OS drivers are evolving. I myself will probably never use them however.

"SteamOS GNU/Linux" or something.
Edit > To add to that, a reason why I hate it is "GNU/Linux" isn't even correct, it would be "GNU/Linux DISTRONAME". Since we don't want specifically state single distro's a general term of Linux to me is acceptable and less confusing.
Saying just Ubuntu or Fedora is fine because that is the OS name (i.e. Windows, we didn't say DOS Windows did we?). GNU/Linux is the userland and kernel that is the basis for most Linux distros. So when covering the common spectrum of "Linux" distros GNU/Linux is proper, Linux is a truncated form. Maybe LLVM and toolchains derived from will supplant GNU itself but until then it's Gnu/Linux.

Please rename your website to gamingongnu/linux.com IMMEDIATELY.
EDIT:
Take a look at this:
http://pedrocr.pt/text/how-much-gnu-in-gnu-linux/
It shows that only about 9% of LOC in Ubuntu in 2011 were GNU. Naturally this would have been significantly different in the early 90s - when the whole [GNU/]Linux thing originated. Of that 9%, about 1% of which was glibc which was replaced in most major distros with a non-gnu fork eglibc (embedded glibc). I'd hazard a guess and say that SteamOS would probably have less GNU userland than Ubuntu. GNU's important to Linux isn't what it once was, calling a Linux OS "GNU/Linux" is like calling a PC "IBM compatible".

Quoting: DrMcCoyThanks for the links. I admit I didn't think of them. i didn't even know half of them.Quoting: CaldazarDo you think in 30 years from now there will be such a thing as different brands of kernels / OSes?Yes. There will never be one swiss army knife of operating systems to rule them all.
You're probably right concerning the industry space, to a degree at least. There will be niches, yes.
But the household area, beginning with entertainment, the area Valve is aiming at?
Let's put it that way: I own an old early 90's cube of a TV, with broken remote control.
Still I'm not buying a new one because even today it is obvious that it is a dying device.
There won't be separate devices for playing music either. Your household computer will do that. As well as waking you up early because it knows there is a traffic jam on the way to your working place.
This one device quite possibly will just stream content and computational power to whatever place, terminal or slave-device it is needed.
You see where I'm going? Games just happen to be the area in which Valve is invested right now but the central feature of SteamOS is its streaming capabilities.
It's a sidenote in most reviews but I think it's the center of Valve's plans with Linux.
Getting to your point, it's probably the missing link to a unifying household device(, not some lame UI design others are wasting their time and resources with).

Quoting: n30p1r4t3Sure, why not? Depends on what type of person he is. I would go for somewhat worse performance over "what a suffering" quite easily. Remarkable improvement in the drivers isn't the same thing as remarkable performance.

You mean "SteamOS GNU/Debian/Ubuntu/Gnome/Apache/Yocto/Valve/Linux", I presume?
